LE VOLTE DELL'ORNELLAIA 2022
POGGIO ALLE GAZZE DELL'ORNELLAIA 2022
Since its first commercial vintage in 1985, Ornellaia has been pivotal in shaping Italy’s fine wine landscape, creating wines from ‘unsanctioned’ varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that were too good to ignore. These rebellious estates were nicknamed the ‘Super Tuscans’. In 1992 the legal system yielded, and a new designation was created to acknowledge these magnificent wines.
Ornellaia’s prestigious vineyards lie just a few kilometres inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea, nestled in the foothills near Bolgheri. Languorous, warm Tuscan summers are balanced by both the altitude and cooling coastal breezes that drift inland across the vines, bringing intense ripeness and perfect harmony in wines of jaw dropping finesse and complexity. The Bordeaux varietals planted here thrive in the marine, alluvial and volcanic soils, with ancient olive and cypress trees standing guard amongst the vines. The beauty, poise and breathtaking intensity of Ornellaia’s wines have made them some of the most collectable in the world.

We are also pleased to highlight the recent release of Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2021.
Hotly anticipated, Ornellaia 2021 releases today at £925 per 6 bottles IB.
2021 will go down in history as a vintage for the ages. It was one of those rare vintages in Bolgheri, and much of Italy, where everything in the growing season came together perfectly to produce truly spectacular wines. Ornellaia is one of the leading examples from this vintage, setting new records as it receives its highest ever score from the critics.
Each year, Ornellaia is given a nickname to reflect its personality. In recognition of the generosity of the Ornellaia terroir in 2021, it has been christened ‘La Generosità’. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, the 2021 sees a little more Cabernet Sauvignon than is usual. We think it is sensational and highly expressive even at this early stage with deep pools of pristine, finely detailed dark fruits such as cassis, black cherry and plum. Herbal nuances overlap sumptuous spice and minerals while impeccably well integrated tannins provide a satin smooth texture.
2021 is a wine for the ages, but as Galloni rightly points out, “There was a time not too long ago when young wines here needed years in bottle to drink well. That's not at all the case with the 2021”. In fact, in 2021 Galloni rates Ornellaia more favourably than its famous neighbour Sassicaia. Considering the pedigree of the vintage and the outstanding critical reception, it is heartening to see the estate release at a sensible, attractive price, level on 2020. It is a truly well-placed gem which no doubt has a bright future ahead of it.
We are proud to work directly with this prestigious Super Tuscan estate which is currently entering an exciting phase of change. New estate director Marco Balsimelli is joined by winemaker Denise Consentino who comes from the Domaines Baron de Rothschild group. With two highly skilled Italian technicians at the helm, we are excited to see the new chapter unfold in the story of Ornellaia.

Each year, Ornellaia is given a nickname to reflect its personality. In recognition of the generosity of the Ornellaia terroir in 2021, it has been christened ‘La Generosità’. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, the 2021 sees a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon than is usual. It is highly expressive even at this early stage with deep pools of pristine, finely detailed dark fruits such as cassis, black cherry and plum. Hugely complex, herbal nuances overlap sumptuous spice and minerals. Impeccably well integrated tannins provide a sleek, chiselled structure that is satin smooth on the palate while a core of energising freshness gives lift. These wonderfully precise flavours fan out on the long, intense finish. Incredible. Drink 2028-2048. Goedhuis Waddesdon Ltd
The 2021 Ornellaia captures all the magic of this sensational vintage on the Tuscan Coast. Rich, ample and expansive, with tremendous polish, the 2021 is pure class. Dark-toned fruit, mocha, espresso, licorice, plum and dried herbs abound. The tannins are present but also beautifully integrated, as is the French oak. There was a time not too long ago when young wines here needed years in bottle to drink well. That's not at all the case with the 2021. The blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot works so well. New oak was 70%. 99 points. Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The Ornellaia 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia offers an extra layer of richness, generosity and plushness that shapes a very open-knit and exuberant Tuscan red. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot. You feel the fruit and oak weight of the wine, the extract and the 15% alcohol content. All of these elements come together to big effect. From that power, you get black cherry, dark fruit, sweet spice and barbecue smoke. The fruit tannins are young, and this edition of Ornellaia proves worthy for medium or long-term drinking, especially as it softens up with more bottle age. 96 points. "this is impeccably done" 95 points, Vinous

A rare gem, Ornellaia Bianco is produced in tiny quantities. The 2021 is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and thanks to a change in regulations, it can now be classified as a DOC rather than IGT. Broad in complexity, lemon balm, mango, chamomile, hay, fresh almonds and hazelnuts are just some of the flavours that we find in this exquisite 2021. A beautiful balancing act, a bright, acidity on the palate cuts through the rich creamy fruit. The careful use of oak (25% new) gives a soft, vivid texture and it salty, mineral finish is long, aromatically intense and profoundly fresh. It will age wonderfully. Drink 2024-2032. Goedhuis Waddesdon
The 2021 Ornellaia Bianco is alluring. I sense a bit more textural richness vis-à-vis prior editions, a positive in my book. White pear, jasmine, sage, mint, white pepper, peach and apricot fill out the layers. Light tropical accents appear with some aeration, adding a tropical flair that is quite attractive. This is impeccably done. 95 points. Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Previously a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, the Ornellaia 2021 Ornellaia Bianco is now all Sauvignon Blanc. The estate recently planted Semillon, so it is possible that we will one day see that grape in the blend (especially because it is known to thrive in hot vintages). This wine plays its best cards in terms of texture. It sports broad shoulders and enough texture to support those many creamy citrus and delicately tropical flavors. A dusting of crushed stone adds elegance. The wine should show its best results in five to 10 years from now. 95 points. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia 2022
£210.00 per 6 bottles In Bond
This Sauvignon Blanc led blend is effortlessly elegant; vibrant, expressive fruit is perfectly tempered with a vibrant salinity that transport you to the Tuscan coast in a sip.
Made mostly with 53% Sauvignon Blanc, 37% Vermentino, 6% Viognier, 2% Verdicchio and 2% Semillon, the 2022 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is fragrant and fresh with aromas of lemongrass, sweet sage, honey and green apple that hover high in the glass. Pretty mineral notes of flint and crushed stone round it off. This is a tart, easy-drinking white wine that would pair with the delicious fresh seafood catch of the day found along the Tuscan coast. The wine is partially aged in new and neutral oak and cement. Drink 2024 - 2026. 91 points. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
Sauvignon Blanc makes up over half of the Poggio alle Gazze blend, which is finished with 37% Vermentino, a splash of Viognier, Verdicchio and, for the first time ever in 2022, a very small amount of Semillon. Delightfully expressive, the nose offers irresistible fleshy white peach, apricot and nectarine notes with zingy grapefruit, fennel leaf, and a pleasing herbal freshness. So silky, it glides across the palate with such grace, and the mouth-watering acidity and mineral inflections give energising lift. The perfect glass for a warm summer’s evening. If you can resist, it ages beautifully too, taking on a wonderful complexity after a few years in bottle. Drink 2024-2028. Goedhuis Waddesdon
Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2022
£105.00 per 6 bottles In Bond
This younger sibling of Super Tuscan royalty has become a superstar in its own right and is one of the top value Italian buys of the 2022 vintage, coming in at £24.21/btl all in.
“With its signature ruby red hue and purple tinges, Le Volte dell’Ornellaia displays lively red fruit aromas alongside light spiciness. The wine is well balanced across all components on the palate, blending smooth tannins with refreshing acidity that lends crunchiness to this enjoyable wine.”
Olga Fusari – Winemaker – December 2022
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, Le Volte is the fantastic value Italian buy from the team behind Ornellaia. The 2022 shows soft, fruity flavours of ripe red cherry, plum, blackberry and blackcurrant infused with pepper and fresh herbs such as sage and thyme. The palate is nicely rounded, with supple, melting tannins providing support to the bright, spiced, fruit. It delivers the trademark Ornellaia style in a playful, earlier drinking format and can be enjoyed from the get-go, although we would happily cellar for three to five years. Drink 2024-2030. Goedhuis Waddesdon
Ornus dell'Ornellaia 2021
£180.00 per 3 half bottles In Bond
One of life's great indulgences, Ornus is an utterly delectable late harvest sweet wine crafted from 100% Petit Manseng. This special sweet wine is the purest expression of this grape’s remarkable ability to concentrate its sugars whilst retaining a wonderful balance of acidity. ‘Ornus’ takes its name from the Latin for the native Flowering Manna Ash tree, which can be seen around the estate. The sap from this tree was historically compared to heavenly Manna , so it seems very apt that the team at Ornellaia have named this divine drop after it. It captivates not only on the palate but also in the glass, which it fills with a beautiful copper-coloured luminosity.
Packaged in a 375-milliliter bottle, the Ornellaia 2021 Ornus dell'Ornellaia is all Petit Manseng. This is an unexpected dessert wine with a note of mossy peat, forest floor or button mushroom that adds an extra layer to the bouquet. Otherwise, you get plenty of dried fruit, honey and candied fruit over a medium-weight finish. The acidity and the residual sugar of the wine are well balanced. Drink 2024 - 2033. 93 points. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
Dried peach and apricot. Hints of caramel. Lemon rind and orange peel. Medium to full body, very sweet but so energetic with very low pH and lively acidity. Some phenolics. Tension and excitement. 170 grams residual sugar. 2,500 half bottles. A pure petit manseng. 95 points. James Suckling
Eligo dell'Ornellaia Grappa Riserva
£150.00 per 3 x 50cl bottles Duty Paid (not currently available for sale In Bond)
"Eligo dell’Ornellaia Grappa Riserva illustrates Ornellaia’s philosophy that an uncompromising selection process in the vineyard, and indeed at every step in the production process is fundamental to creating the highest possible quality.
As autumn arrives and Ornellaia’s wines are placed into their French oak barrels for ageing, the fresh wine pomace is taken to an artisanal distillery hidden deep in the Tuscan countryside. Here the Master Distiller applies her unique savoir-faire and captures the delicate aromatic heart of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape skins.
Once painstakingly distilled in small copper stills, the grappa is aged for a minimum of 3 years in Ornellaia’s very own barrels (twice the required length of time to obtain the Riserva status) before being blended with older vintage reserves to achieve additional depth and character. Being distilled, aged, blended and bottled at the same distillery is the guarantee of a truly artisanal Grappa.
With its soft aromas, silky texture and beautiful golden colour Eligo dell’Ornellaia Grappa Riserva is distinct in style, unique in origin, inspired by nature and crafted by man."

Already Released | Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia 2021
£285.00 per 6 bottles In Bond
Le Serre Nuove is the sought-after second wine from Ornellaia, crafted from the same Bordeaux varieties as the grand vin. As Decanter points out, “in top vintages, the differences between Le Serre Nuove and its bigger brother are truly minimal”, and this is sure to be the case in 2021, a year blessed with a perfect growing season and truly spectacular wines. Vinous’ Antonio Galloni thinks the 2021s in Bolgheri “possess notable textural resonance and volume, with the exceptional balance of a great year.”
Crafted with the same attention to detail as its famed compatriot, the 2021 Le Serre Nuove is a tried-and-tested blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a drop of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. From Morello cherry and blackberry to cinnamon and cloves, the nose is a delightful combination of dark fruits and exotic spices, while the Mediterranean influence is at the forefront of the palate with its mouth-watering black olive. The 2021 Le Serre Nuove is such a serious wine, backed with impressive structure and a core of pristine fruit all the while retaining the vintage’s signature bright acidity and freshness. There is an elegance and poise to this wine that is indicative of a truly superb vintage. Magnificently done. Drink 2025-2035. Goedhuis Waddesdon
It is no surprise in a vintage as brilliant as this, that it is the joint highest scoring Le Serre Nuove ever. The 2021 is such a serious wine, backed with impressive structure and a core of pristine fruit, all the while retaining the vintage’s signature bright acidity and freshness. At less than £48 per bottle IB, and with a hoard of high scores, this is a second wine that holds phenomenal value compared to many of its Bordeaux peers.
The 2021 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia packs a huge punch. Masses of dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, leather, licorice and cloves saturate the palate. I don't remember a Serre Nuove with this much sheer power and somber intensity, but the balance is there, especially with aeration. It will be interesting to see how the 2021 develops. Today it is quite the powerhouse. Drink 2025-2036. 94 points. Antonio Galloni, Vinous
We are immensely proud to work directly with this estate and can highly recommend taking a case or two of this exceptional release.
The 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a nicely extracted and rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This vintage is very generous, even opulent, with dark fruit that is framed by exotic spice, baking chocolate and softly toasted tones from French oak. The wine ends on a creamy note with vanilla and cinnamon. The oak needs a few more years to integrate. Drink 2024-2033. 93 points. Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
