Burgundy En Primeur 2022 | Côte de Beaune

THE WINES OF THE CÔTE DE BEAUNE
The Côte de Beaune covers the 20 miles south of Nuits St Georges, from Aloxe Corton through Beaune to Chagny. It is most strongly associated with the great white wines of Corton Charlemagne, Puligny Montrachet and Chassagne Montrachet, but also produces some exceptional reds from the villages of Savigny lès Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Beaune itself and less well known Maranges and Chorey Les Beaune.
The accepted norm for the white wines is that Meursault produces the fullest and creamiest wines, Puligny the purest, combining limestone minerality with honeyed florality, and the villages of Chassagne and St Aubin are more structured, leaning towards earthy terroir rusticity. These characteristics are arguably less apparent today, due to advancements in wine making and climatic changes, but they still in part remain true. The greatest stylistic influence though, as always, comes from the producer and their own preferred style of wine.
The Côte de Beaune’s red wines have historically been overshadowed by those from the Côte de Nuits. Today, this is not so much the case, as both the quality and individuality of each of the different villages’ wines become more and more appreciated. Surrounding the town of Beaune, wines under its name and Chorey produce fine and floral examples of Pinot Noir. In Savigny the wines are fuller with an earthier texture, whilst its neighbours’ wines from Pernand shine with mineral brightness. South of the town lies the Côte’s most famous red villages; Pommard a source of incredibly intense, long-lived wines, and Volnay, giving more charming wines sometimes likened to a cross between Vosne Romanée and Chambolle Musigny. More recently we have sought red wines from its most southern appellations in Maranges and Santenay, which, like Marsannay in the Côte de Nuits, are definitely worth seeking out.
THE 2022 VINTAGE
In 2022, the Côte de Beaune also benefitted from the June rains, although in total it received less than in the north. The wines have poignant dark fruit characters, balanced by a fine tannic core. Most importantly, they have a very strong appellational personality, reflecting the individuality and style of each of the villages.

LOUIS JADOT | BEAUNE
Historically better known as a negociant, Louis Jadot now own or manage the vast majority of the vineyards that go into their cuvées and sit comfortably alongside the very best domaines in the Côtes. Their range is one of the finest in the region and the brilliance of Frederic Barnier’s wine making offers a beautiful expression of this very exciting vintage. He describes his 2022s succinctly: “The whites have excellent ripeness, the noses very expressive with excellent levels of aromatic intensity”; and for the reds: “they have deep colours, the modest acidity throws emphasis on the silky texture of tannins and the wines are impressive with very good density”.
After the serious shortfall of wine in 2021, the 2022 vintage marks a welcome return to a year of normal yields. Whilst a warm and dry year, crucial levels of rainfall arrived on the finish of June and August, meaning the Burgundians were able to pick healthy volumes of high-quality fruit in perfect conditions. We totally agree with Frederic; the reds are delectable, wonderfully polished, with modest alcohol levels averaging between 13 and 13.5%. The whites have a lovely summer stone fruit expression and will be perfect for youthful drinking.

DOMAINE ROLLIN | PERNAND VERGELESSES
Introduced to our list in 2021, Domaine Rollin is fourth generation domaine with 14 hectares of vines within the Côte de Beaune and the family’s expansive winery in the village of Pernand Vergelesses. It was founded by Raymond Rollin, a vineyard worker in the village of Pernand-Vergelesses who slowly accumulated enough vines for his son Maurice to set up his own domaine and bottle under the family name in 1955. Today, the estate is assiduously managed by Maurice’s grandson Simon.
Whilst they are not accredited as organic, the vineyards are thoughtfully managed respecting both the soil and the flora and fauna surrounding their vines. The white wines are vinified after a very slow pressing in barrel, a small proportion of which are new, and during the élevage will receive gentle lees stirring. The policy for the red wines is to destalk 100%, followed by a delicate extraction, preferring the process of délestage (splashing rather than pumping over or down), and a barrel aging process of 10–15 months, vintage dependent, to preserve the aromatics and finesse of the Pinot Noir. In Simon’s words, the key to the success of 2022 was not only the mid-June rainfall, but the healthy showers on the finish of August, which refreshed the vines and gave both energy and volume to the finished wines.
Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc Les Cloux
£171.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
Sitting behind the hill of Corton, these vines are positioned within a sheltered combe which offers protection and warmth, ideal for managing temperature fluctuations. Flamboyant on the nose, with notes of frangipane and quince. A full, mouth coating style with an earthy structure. A full and concentrated wine, with excellent length. Drink 2024-2028
Pernand-Vergelesses Rouge 1er Cru Les Fichots
£186.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
This, the oldest section of vines within the Rollin estate, was planted by Raymond back in 1945. The soil is an excellent representation of the appellation, combining clay and red iron with a firm bedrock of limestone. Charming aromatics of fresh cherry and red fruits. A textured and lush volume on the palate, restrained by a mineral tension and a finish of classic red pinot fruit. Drink 2025-2032

DOMAINE RAPET | PERNAND VERGELESSES
Domaine Rapet, founded in 1765, boasts 20 hectares of some of the finest vineyards in the northern end of the Côte de Beaune. They have 21 different cuvées from five different villages around the town of Beaune, including an enviable two-hectare parcel of Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru. The current incumbent Vincent assumed responsibility for the domaine in 1985 at just 21, so with 35 vintages under his belt, he is very much a senior statesman in the village of Pernand Vergelesses. Whilst not accredited as organic, he follows extremely careful and environmentally respectful practices. The quality of fruit in the vineyard is paramount to the success of the quality of this fine estate’s wines. They are not flashy, more thoughtful in style, as is he, and they always have a lovely composure and intensity.
In 2021, the Rapet vineyards in Pernand Vergelesses were less impacted by the frosts than some of the more southerly appellations of the Côte de Beaune. Consequently, in 2022 the domaine’s yields are at a similar level and haven’t seen the significant increases that many others did. His memory of the vintage was of the exceptional cleanliness of the fruit at harvest time; the quality of fruit was so pristine that sorting tables weren’t necessary, with beneficial bouts of rain throughout the summer to protecting the restrained yields against any excesses of heat.
WHITE WINES
Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru En Caradeux
£230.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
This impressive Premier Cru faces the hillside of Corton Charlemagne. The cool east-facing white marl slope makes it an ideal site for growing exceptionally pure Chardonnay, a perfect position as temperatures rise throughout the Côte d’Or. A very charming wine, full of white peach and nectarine. This is a wine more subtle than it is powerful, with a very appealing expression of cracked walnuts and fresh croissant on the finish, gentle but also intense. Drink 2024-2030
Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
£695.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
Vincent categorises the vines for this fine cuvée into three groups: his younger vines under 30 years which give 30% of the cuvée, the next 30% from 30 year old vines, and the final 40% from aged vines between 40- 60 years, all from the Pernand Vergelesses sector of the hillside. Peony and rose petal fragrance combine with nutmeg and spice. A full and generous example of this famous Grand Cru, with an earthy structure and noticeable intensity.
Drink 2026-2038
RED WINES
Beaune 1er Cru Les Cent Vignes
£220.00 per 6 bottles In Bond
The light sand and limestone soil gives for a more refined style of red Beaune. The warmer 2022 conditions contribute to a wine with darker fruit characters than in some years, leading with blueberry and Morello cherry. The appealingly plump, rich fruit sits within soft rounded tannins. Charming. Drink 2025-2035
Corton Grand Cru
£480.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
The Rapet Corton comes from Pinot Noir in two different parcels on the Aloxe Corton side of the hill. The vines here are planted on red iron soil, providing substance and backbone to the naturally harmonious style of wine for which Vincent strives. A wine full of spice, fruit compote and structure, broad and scented, the tannins appear initially tender, but build in time to give class and longevity. Drink 2027 -2045

DOMAINE CHANDON DE BRIAILLES | SAVIGNY LÈS BEAUNE
The delightful Château and its gardens designed by Le Nôtre set the scene for this historic estate which has been in family ownership since 1834. The wines like the property have an extraordinary elegance and poise to them, they are impressive without excess. The family can be rightly proud of being one of the leaders in practicing organic farming from the early 1990s and, since 2005, they have moved across to biodynamic viticulture. To protect against soil compaction, vineyard work is done by five horses. Rather than using contractors they own their own horses, and have three horse people, allowing a rotation of work so each horse never does more than four hours a day due to the physicality of the work.
Owner Claude de Nicolay describes her wines this year as a cross between the 2019 and 2020 vintages, possessing excellent ripeness and a balancing freshness; she calls this “a hugely pleasurable vintage”. Almost 20 years on from their move to biodynamic viticulture, she feels they are now really seeing the benefits. The vines root systems have developed in such a way that they cope very well with the drier climatic conditions of recent vintages. She, like one or two other growers, also mentioned how well the older vines performed in 2022; their deep rooting vines certainly suffer less from a drought than younger vines. As is the Domaine’s preference and style, all the wines were 100% whole bunch vinified in 2022. The lasting impression from this excellent tasting was of a set of wonderfully relaxed wines showing the very best of the Côte de Beaune.
WHITE WINES
Pernand Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses Blanc
£475.00 per 6 bottles IB
Coming from the clay limestone soils of Pernand Vergelesses, this is a white wine which is always very floral in nature, balancing a creamy richness with a fresh chalky minerality. Drink 2025-2030
Corton Blanc
£790.00 per 3 bottles IB
This is a fascinating white wine coming from two plots, one in Corton Bessandes and the other in Corton Chaumes below Charlemagne. Owing to a lack of Pinot vines at the nursery back in the 1970s, Corton Chaumes was planted with Chardonnay, and so a star was born. Coming from red soil, this is always quite a structured white wine, depth and profound earthy complexity. Drink 2025-2035
RED WINES
Savigny lès Beaune Aux Fournaux
£280.00 per 6 bottles IB
In Claude’s words, this is a “super village”, as it is a blend of part village Fournaux and part Premier Cru of the same name. Radiant scarlet colour, an array of bramble fruits, damson and sloe. A layered texture from the 100% whole bunch fruit, giving a fine tannic undertone, soft but lively on the finish. Drink 2025-2035
Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses
£325.00 per 6 bottles IB
Following the devastating impact of the 2021 frost, when the domaine produced no Vergelesses, it is fabulous to reintroduce this fine example from the slopes of Pernand. Wild strawberry compote scent and flavours, the tannins have a characterful terroir edge with a granular subtlety. Good poise and tension on the finish. Drink 2025-2036
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières
£370.00 per 6 bottles IB
This fine vineyard was planted in 1956 and the domaine has a peach of a location mid-slope, facing south and southeast. This was one of the earlier bottlings at the domaine immediately after the 2023 harvest, as Claude was keen to capture the brilliant, youthful fruit. Red cherry and a touch of bitter chocolate, combining sweetness and fresh fruit tension. This is a delicious cuvée from one of Savigny’s finest Premiers Crus. Drink 2026-2040
Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses
£445.00 per 6 bottles IB
This 3-hectare plot of 50-year-old vines is the family’s pride and joy and plays an ambassadorial role for the commune of Pernand Vergelesses, much as the hill of Corton does for its namesake appellation. Dark Morello cherry colour, this is a tight and compact wine, with abundant dark berry fruits. Multilayered with a rewarding sweetness on the finish thanks to enticing flavours of mocha and spice. Drink 2026-2039
Corton Les Maréchaudes Grand Cru
£960.00 per 6 bottles IB
The Maréchaudes vineyard sits just below Corton Bressandes. This wine is always very expressive in its youth, and 2022 is no exception: the depth and richness of fruit allowed Claude to use a little more new oak this year during the élevage, enhancing the wine’s generosity. There is power, depth and great persistence on the finish thanks to the combination of iron oxide and clay soils. Superb. Drink 2027-2045
Corton Les Bressandes Grand Cru
£1,160.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The fruit for this high-class Grand Cru comes from four sources; two by Ladoix with a high clay content, and two in Aloxe Corton which boast a little more limestone. This is a confident wine, showing off its Grand Cru pedigree. Fresh strawberry jam and menthol scent, ample and deliciously full in the palate with an excellent harmony of rounded tannins. The life and energy from the limestone buoys up the finish perfectly. Drink 2027-2050
Corton Clos Du Roi Grand Cru
£1,560.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
At 300 metres this steep vineyard close to Corton Charlemagne is the highest in altitude, facing east and containing a high proportion of clay-limestone marl. Claude describes this as the most “aristocratic wine” in their portfolio. Quite a showy style this year, floral rose petal and plum perfume. This is suave and silky in the palate, with flavours of glacé cherry and damson and a long, composed mineral character on the finish. Drink 2027-2053

DOMAINE SIMON BIZE | SAVIGNY LÈS BEAUNE
Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune including 6 very diverse Premiers Crus and two fine Grands Crus parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. The Domaine’s historical preference and reputation is for whole bunch vinification, as it suits their vineyards in Savigny. Patrick Bize’s widow Chisa explained they like to handle the fruit very gently, avoiding any interference in the first 5 days of the vinification followed by light pigeage. Such a method enhances the fruit character and helps create wines with very polished tannins.
In 2022 Chisa and her team reverted to their traditional policy of 100% whole cluster vinification, following an early harvest in August. With such a diverse number of vineyards, it took over two weeks to complete their harvest. The strength of Premiers Crus at this historical domaine offers the perfect example of the diversity of styles within the appellation of Savigny.
Savigny lès Beaune Aux Grands Liards
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB
This village blend comes from three different parcels planted by successive generations of the family in 1939, 1950 and 1979, on just under 2 hectares of vineyards. A very deep opaque colour, with aromas of dark wild alpine fruits and a smattering of pepper and spice. Forward in nature with a light tannic feel and soft pleasing finish. Drink 2026-2037
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Fournaux
£285.00 per 6 bottles IB
A prominent holding of 1 hectare on the Pernand Vergelesses side of the appellation. Deep purple colour, with warm dark fruits and ripe layered flavours, the tannins are very fine containing a light sandy texture, finishing composed and very mellow. Drink 2027-2038
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB
A south facing vineyard with a high sandstone content. A rich and lush style, balancing its overall intensity and concentration, with rounded but firm tannins and some bright fresh acidity revitalising the palate on the finish. Drink 2026-2040
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Vergelesses
£325.00 per 6 bottles IB
Domaine Simon Bize has a substantial 1.6 hectare holding of this Premier Cru, the last before reaching Pernand Vergelesses. This vineyard is distinguished by the high chalk content of its soil. The nose is perfumed and floral, with a whole-bunch alpine strawberry scent. On the palate, the flavours are darker and give the impression of a firm, tense structure. This seriousness is relaxed by fresh coffee bean and nutmeg spice on the finish. A thoughtful and very well-made wine. Drink 2027-2045

DOMAINE TOLLOT BEAUT | CHOREY LÈS BEAUNE
Tollot Beaut own 24 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Chorey lès Beaune, Savigny lès Beaune, Aloxe Corton and Beaune. They were one of the first estates in the Côte d’Or to bottle their own wines in the 1930s and market them under their Domaine label. Today, the estate is run by Nathalie Tollot and her two cousins Olivier and winemaker Jean-Paul Tollot. Jean-Paul wants his wines to be pleasurable and approachable, without losing any appellational identity. This youthful charm can be misleading as history shows the estate’s wines also have an outstanding propensity to age.
2022 represents one of the domaine’s earliest harvests, starting on 25th August, with wine maker Jean-Paul Tollot keen to balance the energy from an early picking with the juicy richness of fruit which characterises the vintage. Nathalie explained how their vineyards around Aloxe and Chorey, traditionally cooler sites, thrived in the summer heat of 2022 and this was clearly on show when tasting from barrel. 2022 is also the first year when the Savigny Premier Cru Lavieres is back to full production, with 2 hectares of replanted vines now being included in the blend. It is wonderful to see a healthy harvest for the Tollot family after the ravages of the 2021 frost.
Bourgogne Rouge
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB
Light red colour, a supple and easy style, with flavours of red currants and plums. Easy, soft tannins, this has plenty of charm and is delightfully approachable. Drink 2024-2030
Chorey lès Beaune La Pièce du Chapitre
£156.00 per 6 bottles IB
This is a monopole vineyard owned by the Tollot family in the north of the appellation. Pure Pinot fruit at its very best. The poor soils that make up this vineyard create a beautifully dynamic wine, with vivid fresh tayberry and strawberry characters. There is a layer of vanilla oak and spice which envelop the fruit, giving warmth and charm. Drink 2025-2034
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB
£240.00 per 3 magnums IB

Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Champ Chevrey
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB
A 1.5-hectare monopole sitting within Aux Fournaux next to Lavieres. This cuvée was absolutely singing when tasting from barrel. A melody of sweet autumnal fruit characters, sloe and damson at the forefront. The deep soils produce a wine with a weighty structure and the tannins possess controlled power. Drink 2027-2038
Aloxe Corton 1er Cru Les Vercots
£300.00 per 6 bottles IB
At the domaine they consider this wine as coming from two relatively young parcels of vines, but in fact today they are 20 years old. This is a fine Premier Cru facing southwest towards Pernand Vergelesses and Savigny lès Beaune. Dark cocoa, liquorice and coriander, a very full and generous style for an Aloxe, with appealing zest and freshness on this finish. Drink 2026-2038
Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves
£315.00 per 6 bottles IB
Protected from the west wind by the Montagne de Beaune, this is an exceptional Premier Cru. Brilliant scarlet colour, a powerfully intense Beaune wine with deep blackberry fruit flavours. Beaune 1er Cru Clos du Roi
£315.00 per 6 bottles IB
£330.00 per 3 magnums IB

MAISON ROCHE DE BELLENE | BEAUNE
Maison Roche de Bellene is the creation of Nicolas Potel, who grew up at Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in Volnay. He holds dear the historic négociant values, finding and blending the best cuvées to represent the individuality of an appellation. He has verbal contracts with growers throughout the Côte d’Or, allowing him to maintain positions for the most prized vineyards. Occasionally he might lose a parcel but, on the plus side, it gives him flexibility to find new ones and make exciting additions to his range.
For his negociant wines, Nicolas carefully oversees and advises on vineyard management. The growers vinify the wines, as was the tradition for negoce, and then Nicolas selects his preferred casks following vinification, completing the barrel élevage in his cellars in Beaune. Once the malolactic fermentations are complete, he will blend the cuvées before they go through two winters in cask ahead of bottling.
Volnay Vieilles Vignes
£175.00 per 6 bottles IB
A flagship wine for Nicolas, as Volnay is where his roots lie. Here, he has some extraordinary contacts with the most famous of growers, contributing to the outstanding quality of this village cuvée. A wild, brooding wine, full of savoury spice and rich dark berries. The tannins show a phenolic maturity and ripeness and good, medium length. Drink 2026-2036
Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines

Radiant and full of appeal, layers of loganberry and succulent juicy summer fruits. Whilst there is a tremendous overall volume, the tannic core provides tension to give a profound edge on the finish. A style which will reward bottle aging. Drink 2027-2042

The most muscular of the Morey Grand Crus, Clos de la Roche produces a wine of real grandeur, with a closer resemblance to those within Gevrey Chambertin. A combination of blueberry, plum, mocha and spice, this wine is immediately impressive. Ample and full, pitch perfect in its balance between supple, savoury fruit and the roundness of the tannins, which are almost fine sandstone like in nature. Very long and great depth. Drink 2027-2045
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
£1,195.00 per 6 bottles IB
A fine representation of this famous Grand Cru, showing a balance between open, exotic spiced dark fruits and a muscular sturdiness. Immediately striking with its dark mocha and liquorice flavours, it keeps building on the palate, offering great intensity. The core of tannic depth gives body to this wine, which will age for a decade or two. Drink 2028-2055
Echezeaux Grand Cru
£1,400.00 per 6 bottles IB
A striking and generous wine, with dark, warm confit fruit flavours. Sweet berry flavours, the tannins are delicate, creating a very graceful, flowing style of wine on the palate. It builds in richness and depth on the finish with poise and Grand Cru self-confidence. Drink 2025-2042
Chambertin Clos de Béze Grand Cru
£2,875.00 per 6 bottles IB
It is almost impossible to distinguish the difference in quality between this and Nicolas’ Chambertin, as this is an equally great wine in the making. More openly dense and powerful in style, with warming summer pudding flavours which dance across the palate. The muscle and weight perfectly complement the ample richness. A superb tannic texture and a lift of acidity on the finish completes the circle for a brilliant wine. Drink 2027-2050
Chambertin Grand Cru
£2,875.00 per 6 bottles IB
The initial shyness on the nose is a total curve ball, as this is a sensationally good wine given time to evolve in the glass. The opening salvo is of energetic red fruits from the 50% destemmed fruit, followed by the nuance of whole bunch characters from the 50% whole cluster. Together they show a wine of great substance and composure, with complex wild alpine fruit flavours. Tremendously layered and so persistent. Drink 2027-2050

BENJAMIN LEROUX | BEAUNE
Ben Leroux created his own label in 2013 which represents part domaine (8 hectares of vines) and part negoces, purchasing grapes from approximately 20 hectares covering some of the most exciting appellations in the Côte d’Or. His background is exemplary: following internships at some of the greatest estates around the world, he was responsible for the famous Pommard estate, Comte Armand, for 15 years, making a roll call of exceptional vintages. For the negoce wines, his policy is to buy grapes rather than juice or wine. He insists on having a hand in the vineyards from which he buys, so that the fruit meets his exacting standards.
The consistency of quality in the 2022 vintage, across all areas and classifications, is the one of the highlights of the year in Ben’s view. As a negociant covering the whole of the Côte d’Or he was not only able to see this first hand, but also to make the most of all its benefits. Following an August harvest, he noticed his wines were very advanced in their vinification, so he decided to do a spring racking to refresh and aerate them, giving greater microbial protection during the barrel aging. Tasting from cask, his range were really showing the benefits of such a decision and excellent fruit progression.
Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Hauts Jarrons
£240.00 per 6 bottles IB
Though found within the more recognised 1er Cru of La Dominode, Ben prefers to sell this Savigny under its lieu die ‘Jarrons’. Wild, gamey, and full of rich bramble fruit flavours, this wine expresses the warming characteristics of the summer seasons, whilst still possessing a rewarding freshness on the finish. Drink 2026-2039
Pommard
£300.00 per 6 bottles IB
A classic Pommard, this is a blend of three different locations: the naturally warm site of Les Cras, the slightly cooler Vaumuriens, and the highly prized village location of Noisins. Using 50% whole bunch, this is a pure and direct style of wine, combining fresh red cherry aromas with tannic tension and great clarity of fruit. Drink 2026-2038
Vougeot Clos du Village
£324.00 per 6 bottles IB
This is such a lovely lieu-dit on the border of Chambolle Musigny. There are just 3 hectares of village wine in Vougeot, of which Clos du Village is one, sitting next door to Clos de Vougeot and below Chambolle Les Amoureuses. We are very thankful to have an exclusivity on this cuvée. Light violet colour, an ample and charming style, Morello cherry and cocoa powder. An easy elegance, lacy tanning and very pure finish. Drink 2026-2040
Chambolle Musigny
£456.00 per 6 bottles IB
After the frosts of 2021, this wine has reverted to its normal origins, combining grapes from the village’s highest vineyard, Les Veroilles, with those of the lower vineyards of Les Athets. The two marry perfectly with clear red fruits, glacé cherry and strawberry. The lower vineyards are reflected in sweet, succulent nature of the wine, whilst the cooler higher slopes give some grippy tension and mouth-watering lift. Drink 2025-2037
Vosne Romanée
£456.00 per 6 bottles IB
Sourced from five different locations in the village. Deep dark Morello cherry colour, flavours of bilberry and olallieberry, a bright wine with resonance and crystalline clarity. The 30% whole bunch gives a hint of chewy structure and a long lasting textural finish. Drink 2026-2037
Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans
£456.00 per 6 bottles IB
Mitans derives from the old French word for middle or centre, aptly for this cru which lies directly in the heart of the appellation, at the foot of the slope just beneath the village. The soil here is fine clay which preserved maximum moisture for the vines in the drier summer periods this year. The result is a relaxed wine, with Black Forest fruits. The tannins are broad and muscular, and the finish is creamy and delicious. Drink 2026-2042
Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots
£675.00 per 6 bottles IB
Aux Boudots is the most northerly Premier Cru in Nuits St Georges, neighbouring Vosne Romanée’s Aux Malconsorts, making it a prized source of high-class fruit. The initial impression is of classy red fruit purity, reminiscent of Vosne Romanée. In contrast, the palate is more typical of Nuits’ power and muscle, with chewy black fruit and a multitude of dark flavours, with spice and coffee bean on the finish. Drink 2027-2042
Echezeaux Grand Cru
£825.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On allocation)
The fruit for this stunning Grand Cru all comes from the En Orveaux section, which is a naturally cooler spot and so perfectly placed to cope with many of the hotter days in 2022. Bright, pure cranberry and raspberry, the minimal amount of topsoil in this location is reflected in the tension and muscle of the mid palate, with charm and volume flowing through on the finish. Drink 2027-2049

DOMAINE COMTE ARMAND | POMMARD
This 5.23-hectare monopole has been in the Comte Armand family since 1828 and, as Pommard’s most celebrated vineyard, it arguably just missed out on Grand Cru status. In the extremely capable hands of Paul Zanetti this domaine is now fully biodynamic in its vineyard management and winemaking practices. Over the past 25 years the family have carefully expanded their vineyard holdings in the locality. Today they make a wonderful representation of the Côte de Beaune, including vineyards in Volnay and the much-overlooked village of Auxey Duresses which, thanks in part to Paul’s efforts, is amongst others rapidly gaining credibility as a rising star in the southern Côte d’Or.
In 2022 Paul vinified in much the same manner as he did for the 2021 vintage; 100% destalking all his fruit. Not because he was worried about the ripeness of the stalks, but in main due to lack of space in the winery, and he needed to maximise space in his tanks to fit all the fruit in. The grapes enjoyed a cool maceration at the start of the vinification, enhancing both the colour and flavour profile of the wines. The barrel élevage will be extended into 2024 as they had to purchase a little more new oak this year after the very small 2021 crop, and he feels the wines will benefit from further aging for the oak to fully integrate and support the substance of fruit that characterises the vintage.
Bourgogne Aligoté Comte Armand
£110.00 per 6 bottles IB
Recent vintages in Burgundy represent a new era for this once overlooked grape variety. Climatic change has been its saviour, and its extraordinary individuality means many growers are encouraged to plant a few rows in vineyards that were once the preserve of chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune. The Comte Armand Aligoté shows off its qualities to great effect. Vinified 50% in stainless steel and 50% barrel, it combines a perfume of white fruits with a weight of yellow fruits. A glycerol like volume, richly layered with mouth-watering uplift of flavours on the finish. Drink 2024-2028
Auxey Duresses Comte Armand
£155.00 per 6 bottles IB
The northerly exposed vineyards of Auxey Duresses, sitting directly behind Meursault, are fast gaining recognition for producing wines with a charming representation of Pinot Noir. The berry fruit characters of blueberry and loganberry are a little darker than some years, showing the warmth of the season. The rewarding sweet spice finish and richness of fruit defies its village appellational status. Perfect for youthful drinking. Drink 2025-2033
Volnay
£240.00 per 6 bottles IB
This wine comes from two different locations in the appellation: Les Grands Champs which provides finesse and elegance, and Les Famines, giving body and power. A sweet fragrance of summer tayberry and raspberry, this is a fuller and more muscular style of Volnay. Spiced, savoury notes, firm in structure, with a robust finish. Drink 2026-2038
Auxey Duresses 1er Cru
£260.00 per 6 bottles IB
With three very small Premier Cru parcels, Les Bretarins, Les Bas des Duresses and Climat du Val, Paul thinks it best to blend them together to make one single cuvée as a complete expression of Auxey Premier Cru. Smokey dark bilberry characters leap from the glass, with a sweet ripe fruit and subtle, sandy tannins. The oaked vanilla and spice finish balances perfectly with the tension on the finish, contributing to its overall complexity and appeal. Drink 2026-2036
Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets
£480.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
This vineyard lies at the Pommard end of the village and shares some of its neighbour’s iron-rich soils. It is always the first parcel to be picked at the domaine. Full of energy and red crystalline fruits, cranberry and red cherry. The tannins are taut, pulling the wine back prior to a lovely explosion of sweet ripe redcurrant characters on the finish. Delicious. Drink 2026-2043
Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Épeneaux
£675.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The Clos is divided into 4 different sectors based on location and the age of the vines, the oldest a 1.5 ha parcel is 100 years old. Each section is vinified and barrel aged separately, then blended together just a few months before bottling. Tasting from barrel is done by parcel and then a proposed blend of the 4 plots. This is such a complex wine of Grand Cru magnitude. The array of fresh red fruits, bitter cherry, pomegranate and cranberry combine beautifully with the ripe dark summer pudding fruits on the palate. The initial impression is one of direct linear purity, but as the flavours open up, so too does the breadth and power. The tannins are very round but present giving weight and thought-provoking length. This wine radiates with class. Drink 2028-2057

DOMAINE ANNE-FRANÇOISE GROS | POMMARD
Following their marriage in 1998 François Parent and Anne-Françoise Gros combined their family estates in Pommard and Vosne Romanée to create this superb 10 hectare estate under the A F Gros label. The domaine comprises some of the finest terroirs in the Côte d’Or. Francois and Anne have stepped aside to let their children run the estate. Caroline looks after the commercial side and Mathias the vineyards and winemaking. Together they make a dynamic duo. Attentive to the environment, Mathias follows organic practices in the vineyard which he carries through into his winemaking, intervening as little as possible in the process.
In 2022 there have been some welcome additions to the family vineyard holdings. Anne-Françoise’s aunt in Vosne Romanée has passed on her vineyards to her nephews and nieces, which has meant a reorganisation amongst the different branches of Gros family and their holdings in the Côte de Nuits. As a result, Caroline and Mathias no longer have the Village parcel Clos de la Fontaine, but have been lucky beneficiaries of an additional half a hectare of Echezeaux and a new parcel of Clos de Vougeot to their portfolio. As always, Mathias did a very gentle maceration of the red grapes this year: more of an infusion. With such excellent ripeness and maturity of the stalks, he was wholly comfortable to whole cluster vinify at 50% for the village cuvées and 75% for the Grands Crus. Only two cuvées the Hautes Cotes de Nuits and Beaune Boucherottes were fully destemmed in 2022.
WHITE WINES
Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB
The higher slopes above the Cote de Nuits have excelled in 2022 to give white wines with delicious vibrancy and energy, as evidenced by this Chardonnay, which, not only has terrific depth, but is already so approachable.
Drink 2024-2030
RED WINES
Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB
These vines are in a higher altitude location in the Hautes Côtes above Nuits St Georges. A lovely representation of Pinot Noir’s delicacy and purity. Crystal clear red cherry and raspberry fragrance, direct and mouth-watering with an appealing line of fresh acidity on the finish. Drink 2025-2032
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Guettes
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB
Cranberry and pomegranate, a lively racy style, with a strong terroir-driven gravelly, tannic identity. A fine reflection of this fine Premier Cru from the upper slopes of Savigny Les Beaune. Drink 2026-2038
Beaune 1er Cru Les Boucherottes
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB
Les Boucherottes is on the southern boundary of Beaune just above Pommard’s Epenots vineyards. This side of the appellation tends to produce poised, elegant wines rather than the firmer, more muscular style of the northern side of the commune. This was the only appellational wine to be 100% destalked, in order to show the florality of aromas which Mathias didn’t want to mask with additional fruit tannins. Sloe and boiled sweet scent, the initial impression is seductive, ahead of the earthy tannic grip which gives depth and an additional dimension at the finish. Drink 2027-2039
Chambolle Musigny
£425.00 per 6 bottles IB
The domaine has five parcels across the village and blends them to make a beautiful Chambolle Musigny. A gentle and charming style, with a silky, viscous texture. Flavours of wild strawberry and cinnamon, fine and seductive on the palate. Drink 2026-2040
Vosne Romanée Aux Réas
£450.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
This is an excellent parcel in Vosne Romanée situated in the vineyards that flow into Nuits St Georges at the southern end of the village. Mathias describes this as a serious styled wine for the appellation. Dark berry and alpine fruit with some sweet spice from the 40% whole bunch vinification. Clear, crystalline red berry flavours on the palate, the tannins are subtle with a promising saline finish. Drink 2026-2034
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
£1,695.00 per 6 bottles IB
This is a lovely addition to the portfolio, amounting to half a hectare from two prime parcels named La Garenne and Musigny. With smoky fruits of the forest, this is a powerfully structured wine, with earthy winter fruits. Savoury and extremely long. Drink 2026-2055
Echezeaux Grand Cru
£975.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The Gros parcel of Echézeaux is one of the finest in the appellation, in a plot called Les Loachauses. A perfume of sweet raspberry, red currant and boysenberry. A very stylish wine, juicy, succulent and sweet with a flowing silky texture. The rich fruit builds on the palate, kept in place by a very refreshing line of acidity which gives great persistence on the finish. Dignified and classy. Drink 2028-2057
Richebourg Grand Cru
£2,250.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Situated on the northern sector of this great Grand Cru, lying below Cros Parantoux, and an admirable example of this majestic Grand Cru. An absolute highlight from a wealth of amazing 2022s during our three weeks of tasting. Such an extraordinarily complete wine. Cherry, whole bunch spice and bitter chocolate. It combines robustness and rounded charm. The tannins have a richness to their weight, which just keeps flowing all the way through to a long-lasting finish. Drink 2027-2058

DOMAINE NICOLAS ROSSIGNOL | VOLNAY
Nicolas Rossignol is the fifth generation in his family of wine growers in Volnay and part of the dynamic generation who took on their family estates during the 1990s. Having started small with just 3 hectares, he has carefully built his domaine up to 17 hectares covering some of the most exceptional vineyards in Beaune, Pommard, Savigny Lès Beaune and Volnay. Nicolas’s winemaking is always adaptable, making the most of his modern winery on the outskirts of Beaune. He remains broadminded on the question of destalking vs whole bunch vinification. He likes his wines to develop slowly in cask, to bring out greater aromatic complexity and contribute to strengthening a wine.
Nicolas likens the 2022 vintage to the excellent 2019, but, in his view, its wines have a greater sensation of freshness on the palate. He is not a fan of picking too early and so started his harvest later than many of his neighbours, on 15th September. The climatic conditions this year ripened the pip and skin tannins perfectly, so he felt it was a year that leant itself to a higher proportion of whole cluster vinification. He is confident in the benefits of new oak from his new cooper, Bruno Lorenzon in Mercurey, a small producer who sources and ages the wood to create a style which gives tight minerality rather than fat exuberance, with minimal flavour impact from the wood. The quality of his 2022s reflects this philosophy perfectly.
Volnay Origines
£275.00 per 6 bottles IB
A blend of 4 different plots, Les Buttes, Les Grand Champs, Les Famines and Les Lurets, from vineyards aged between 10-60 years old, produces a very complete example of the appellation. A crisp and energetic style, with bright, crunchy, fresh fruit flavours. A charming purity and clarity, and hints of what Nicolas describes as ‘sucrosité’ on the finish. Drink 2024-2036
Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Angles
£375.00 per 6 bottles IB
Clos des Angles is a warm vineyard sitting beneath Clos des Duc. Noticeable wild spiced dark berry flavours, with a touch of mocha and fresh coffee bean showing the generosity of its sunny location. Very full and layered rounded tannins, rewarding and ample on the finish. Drink 2026-2040
Volnay 1er Cru Santenots
£465.00 per 6 bottles IB
Nicolas has two different vineyard plots in this fine Premier Cru. The younger 20-year-old parcel borders Volnay and the older 70-year-old parcel lies beside Meursault. He describes it as a Volnay with Côte de Nuits DNA. A graceful, silky harmonious style, with Chambolle fruit characteristics, with some sweet dark berry flamboyance. A perfect combination between charm and ample fruit. Drink 2025-2040
Volnay 1er Cru Chevret
£490.00 per 6 bottles IB
This vineyard lies at the foot of Les Caillerets, but its soil composition is quite different; more clay and pebbles result in a fuller, broader style of Volnay. A deep and almost brooding wine, with a wild savoury, autumnal forest scent. Sloes and bramble flavours and dark toffee. Full and very intense, a saline edge and dark bitter chocolate on the finish. Drink 2026-2043
Pommard 1er Cru Argillieres
£490.00 per 6 bottles IB
It is great to have this cuvée back in 2022, as Nicolas had to blend all his smaller Premier Cru cuvées together last year. A small three hectare Premier Cru, sitting above Grand Epenots, this is a wine which shows the quality of its fine location. A fresh and racy wine, with pure damson and Victoria plum flavours, the tannins have a steely edge to them, giving depth and firmness and a rewarding mouth-watering salinity on the finish. Drink 2026-2043
Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots
£780.00 per 6 bottles IB
From the lower slopes of Pommard, heading towards Beaune, part of the iron-rich soils of this vineyard were planted in 1900, creating an extremely intense and concentrated wine. Such was the quality of the fruit from these old vines in 2022, that Nicolas decided to do 100% whole bunch vinification. A perfume of dark cherry and wild fruits of the forest. The focus is on richness and sweetly spiced flavours, plump, with a fabulous volume which lingers for a very rewarding length of time on the finish. Lovely! Drink 2027-2045

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC BOILLOT | PULIGNY MONTRACHET
Bearing the name of founder Jean-Marc, this domaine is now managed by his daughter Lydie and husband François. This outstanding estate owes its origin to an inheritance from Jean-Marc’s grandfather Etienne Sauzet. Jean-Marc learnt his trade as winemaker at Sauzet, before setting up his own 11-hectare domaine with some of the finest vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. More recently they have purchased a further 10 hectares in the Mâconnais. Their vinification process is designed to express the purity of Puligny fruit: a short cold settling of 24 hours follows pressing, followed by 11 months élevage with a weekly bâtonnage before bottling.
Lydie Alzingre is delighted with their 2022 wines. The return to normal volumes is, of course, a welcome relief, but more importantly the character of the vintage perfectly suits the domaine’s preferred style of intensity and elegance of fruit in perfect balance. Following the excellent flowering conditions in early June, François was planning to start the harvest around 10th September, but, as always, vignerons must be adaptable, and the warm summer conditions meant they brought forward their plans, starting at the beginning of the month. This enabled them to preserve freshness and keep it in harmony with the appealing ripeness of fruit and, vitally, keep alcohol levels at around 13%.
Puligny Montrachet
£275.00 per 6 bottles IB
Generous and expressive, combining a soft creamy texture with characters of cracked hazelnut and vanilla fudge. Not overly powerful, but rather medium in weight, it is a fine reflection of village level quality, approachable for easy youthful drinking. Drink 2024-2028
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne
£360.00 per 6 bottles IB
The highest of Puligny’s Premiers Crus, La Garenne sits below the treeline overlooking the village. Straw yellow colour, there is a refined delicacy and purity to this lovely wine. The floral nature of the nose sits comfortably alongside the delicate flavours of panna cotta and fresh lime. Gentle and surprisingly long on the finish. Lovely! Drink 2025-2034
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
£395.00 per 6 bottles IB
A lower lying Premier Cru in Puligny with a combination of clay and rocky, stony soils. This wine is always bold, complex, and long, and is a hugely sought after amongst the growers in the village. Satsuma and Seville orange peel open out from the glass, starting out floral and generous, ahead of the terroir depth and tension on the palate, giving vigour and a Premier Cru worthy self-confidence. Drink 2024-2031
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet
£395.00 per 6 bottles IB
There is always a touch of buttery ostentation to this cuvée reflecting the more flamboyant nature of its neighbouring village, Meursault. Beguiling aromas of tropical fruit are supported by notes of warm toffee and Crunchy Nut Cornflake. On the palate this is kept in shape by a central line of minerality, but the flavours of mango and lychee give this wine so much appeal, and there is no shortage of depth to allow for a good aging period. Drink 2024-2032
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes
£450.00 per 6 bottles IB
One of Puligny’s senior Premiers Crus, this is a wonderful example of its quality, balancing subtlety with generosity. Harmonious and poised, this cuvée is redolent of freshly squeezed citrus fruits, upheld by flavours of warm toffee and clotted cream. A taut intensity at the back of the palate gives further depth, and the lift of minerality gives energy and distinction on the finish. Drink 2025-2035
Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
£925.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Whilst Bâtard-Montrachet has the same substructure as its neighbour Le Montrachet, it has a greater proportion of topsoil. The impact is to produce a flamboyant, powerful and generous Grand Cru. Domaine Jean Marc Boillot has just under 1/5th of a hectare, so this wine is a real rarity and saved for bottling rather than being offered to taste at the domaine. When available, it is always an absolute gem. (Not tasted)

DOMAINE JEAN-PHILIPPE FICHET | MEURSAULT
Jean-Philippe was just 20 when his father handed down the family’s sharecropping arrangements in the village of Meursault. In the intervening 40 years, Jean-Philippe has lost none of his enthusiasm nor his thirst for knowledge. As a young winemaker he espoused the then fashion for new oak and frequent bâtonnage in cask, making full and hedonistic wines. Today, the estate’s style has evolved. Jean-Philippe believes the origins of great wine are first and foremost in the vineyard. His motto is to respect the soil and the vine, treating only when necessary. Earlier picking dates deliver a stunning mineral freshness. In the winery he operates a much gentler handling process than in his youth. Larger casks and less new oak mean the wines possess superb fruit content.
Thanks to a healthy harvest in 2022, Jean-Philippe was back to his happy ebullient self. The balance between ripeness of fruit, terroir typicity and freshness, which is so much the personality of the 2022 vintage, is so evident in his wines this year. Whilst an early harvest, picking on 26th August, he eschews the modern-day fashion of making white wines with accentuated levels of reduction. The aim is to enhance flavour with an early racking from cask following 12 months élevage, prior to a final 6 months in stainless steel tank. Such a fine range of wines with great appellational identity.
Bourgogne Blanc Vieilles Vignes
£135.00 per 6 bottles IB
The dominant force in this old vine cuvée of Bourgogne Blanc comes from the Les Palland vineyard close to Puligny, planted between 1945 and 1950. Fragrant pink grapefruit and blood orange, very floral in nature, this is supple and creamy on the finish with heaps of youthful charm. Drink 2025-2030
Monthelie Blanc
£150.00 per 6 bottles IB
The location of these vines on the slopes of Monthelie is warm, with a fine catchment of sunlight. A generous and exotic style, with sunny fruit salad and lychee flavours and a nutty hazelnut undertone. Approachable for early drinking. Drink 2024-2028
Meursault
£280.00 per 6 bottles IB
£320.00 per 12 halves IB
£310.00 per 3 magnums IB
Coming from five different vineyard plots in different locations, aspects, and soil types across the appellation, this is a classical representation of Meursault. A benchmark style for the appellation, combining a fine creamy richness with characters of citrus and orange blossom, a layered structure and a feeling of almost tannic tension on the finish. Drink 2024-2030
Meursault Meix sous le Château
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB
A very central lieu-dit close to the village below the town hall. West facing and shaded in the morning, it makes the most of the afternoon sun and achieves excellent ripeness. This location excelled in 2022, combining the very best of a mixed microclimate of coolness and warmth. The palate is full and generous, a touch of flamboyance from caramelised fruit flavours, held together with a line of zesty freshness on the finish. Drink 2025-2031
Meursault Les Gruyaches
£350.00 per 6 bottles IB
The oldest vineyards on the estate were planted back in 1928 by Jean-Philippe’s grandfather. These deep-rooted vines were a perfect foil for the drier summer conditions in 2022. The opening is a little reserved, with a bitter lemon freshness. The palate has a broad, powerful dimension, full of ripe peach and fresh apricot flavours. Jean-Philippe says the naturally humid location of Gruyaches refreshed the vines throughout the summer, giving it is such a confident style on the palate. Drink 2025-2034
Meursault Les Chevalières
£380.00 per 6 bottles IB
Always a wine with a huge amount of self-confidence, this has rich exotic fruit flavours of melon and lychee, with an attractive glycerol texture, creamy and buttery with a charming silky finish. Drink 2025-2034
Meursault Le Tesson
£395.00 per 6 bottles IB
£410.00 per 3 magnums IB
The elder statesmen in the village very much consider this fine vineyard a Premier Cru equivalent. It is only due to a quirk of history and appellational bureaucracy that it isn’t. A wine of great poise and class, all the components are so well integrated. Stylish flavours of mandarin and grapefruit. Alive and energetic, with some rewarding lively acidity and pistachio flavours which give a lift of sweetness on the finish. Lovely. Drink 2025-2036
Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts
£260.00 per 3 bottles IB
Puligny Montrachet’s last Premier Cru before you arrive in the commune of Meursault. Its clay and marl soils are more akin to its neighbour, and therefore makes a bolder style of Puligny, whilst retaining a purity and citrus zest. Honeyed and glazed peach on the nose, this is a generous and crowd-pleasing wine with flavours of warm brioche, panna cotta and crisp Crunchy Nut Cornflake. Full and delicious. Drink 2025-2035

DOMAINE PATRICK JAVILLIER | MEURSAULT
This great domaine in Meursault continues under Patrick’s name but it is very much his daughter Marion and son-in-law Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy, who, as the new generation, are taking the domaine forward. Patrick remains an ever-present figure, popping up around the estate, helping and gently guiding wherever he can. Pierre-Emmanuel, responsible for making the white wines, considers himself fortunate to draw on Patrick’s 45 years of experience.
The sadness on Marion’s face at her empty cellar when we visited to taste the 2021 vintage was a long and distant memory this year. It was a delight to see them resplendent and full of casks, stacked high with both the 2022 and 2023 vintages! Smiles were back on both her and Pierre-Emmanuel’s faces. 2022 was Pierre-Emmanuel’s 7th August harvest in his 12 years at the domaine! This allowed him to keep a balancing freshness in his wines, whilst the warmth of the summer months perfectly suited the generosity of ripeness which is always a key component of the appellation of Meursault.
Bourgogne Côte d’Or Blanc Cuvée des Forgets
£125.00 per 6 bottles IB
This cuvée, from vineyards on the Volnay side of the village, represents a truly Meursault-esque style of Bourgogne Blanc, with characteristically flamboyant fruit. The 2022 is a beautiful representation of this style. Lemon yellow colour, a delicious expression of clementines and mandarins shows off a breadth of ripe fruit, and light, fresh acidity on the finish. Drink 2023-2027
Bourgogne Côte d’Or Blanc Cuvée Oligocène
£150.00 per 6 bottles IB
A beautiful contrast to the Forgets cuvée, the vineyards for Oligocène sit close to Puligny Montrachet, with a little less topsoil and greater limestone content. The result is a more floral style, with a linear, citrus minerality. Aromas of honeysuckle and fresh pears provide volume and delicious fruit appeal on the finish. Drink 2023-2027
Meursault Clos du Cromin
£290.00 per 6 bottles IB
The warm, south-easterly facing slopes from which this wine is sourced contribute to a wonderfully showy example of Meursault. Quintessential in style, this is creamy and buttery, with a silky richness and gentle freshness. Hedonistic, but not too excess. A little beauty. Drink 2023-2030
Meursault Les Clousots
£335.00 per 6 bottles IB
Les Clousots is not a lieu-dit in its own right, but rather a combination of two separate vineyards: Les Clousots, higher up in the slopes, and Les Crotots, located beneath the highly regarded Premier Cru Porusots. Such a combination contributes to a classic Meursault. None of this cuvée was made in 2021 owing to the severe frosts of that vintage, so it was wonderful to count 20 casks lined up in the cellar this year, and what a beauty it is! A deeply structured Meursault, with a fragrance of hazelnut and Poruzots chalk. The rich, broad flavours build on the palate with great power and length on the finish. Quite simply excellent. Drink 2025-2030
Meursault Les Tillets
£290.00 per 6 bottles IB
The five parcels that make up this cuvée within the lieu-dit of Les Tillets are situated on the higher slopes of Meursault facing south-east, influencing a more mineral style. This is not an obvious Meursault; thought provoking with refined gentle floral characters, this is harmonious and softly graceful on the finish. Drink 2025-2031
Meursault Cuvée Tête de Murger
£440.00 per 6 bottles IB
Tête de Murger highlights Pierre-Emmanuel’s skill in blending two different climats within the appellation to create a perfect cuvée; Les Casse-Têtes up in the hills and Murger de Monthélie close to Volnay. Aromas of warm butter and fresh dough underpin flavours of mandarin and quince. A full and generous wine, which will evolve in bottle to highlight all the joys of the appellation. Drink 2025-2035
Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
£1,100.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
The Javillier parcel on this great Grand Cru hillside faces due south and in 2022 highlights the exuberance and opulence that is the hallmark of Corton Charlemagne. Panna cotta, pecan nut and freshly baked croissant, this is a joyously generous Charlemagne. The flavours of toffee and fudge linger beautifully on this finish, delighting all the senses. Drink 2025-2035

DOMAINE ANTOINE JOBARD | MEURSAULT
Antoine’s first vintage was back in 1998 when he joined his father before taking charge of the Domaine. During this time the style has evolved. The wines are less reserved than in his father François’s time, but they still maintain the Domaine’s hallmark of making wines which have the potential for great age and longevity. His winemaking is traditional. He is keen for his wines to go through a full 12 month ageing process in cask; in the final few months before bottling and after the racking process, he allows each cuvée to finish its development partly in tank to preserve a vitality and freshness, and partly in cask to allow the wine to maintain depth and volume. His attentive nature and commitment to the very best is receiving just rewards, and so it is unsurprising that his wines are now becoming some of the most sought after from the village in Meursault around the world.
What a difference a year can make. In 2021 Antoine’s cellars were empty, producing just 1,500 cases of wine. In 2022 he returns to a normal crop for the domaine with 4,500 cases and, as always, this is an exceptional range. This vintage sees him slightly eschewing the fashion amongst some white producers for making wines with an excess of reserve and reductive fruit characters. He reduced the level of lees in the barrels during élevage to enhance the fruit flavours and offer a more authentic style, faithful to their vineyard origin. This vintage is his second making red wines, following his purchase of Domaine Mussy in Pommard. His winemaking skill is of the highest order for both colours, as highlighted by this fine range.

Drink 2025-2035
Meursault Blagny 1er Cru
£695.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
From a small combe high up at the edge of Meursault bordering the appellation of Puligny. Antoine feels its enclosed position means the fruit tends to ripen a little earlier than his other vineyards, and this is the first white vineyard he picks at harvest time, on 25th August this year. A very generous wine, with flavours of Jersey cream and hints of toffee banana and pecans. Long and very concentrated. Drink 2025-2030

Very rounded tannins and the dark spice on finish gives a further burst of unctuous sweet ripe fruit. Drink 2025-2034
Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots
£490.00 per 6 bottles IB
From the sector known as Les Petits Epenots which is recognised for making a fine, poised style of Pommard. A deep crimson colour, with wild fruits of the forest aromas. CHÂTEAU DE MEURSAULT | MEURSAULT
This fine property has gone through some very exciting developments under the direction of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet, whose family own a highly respected domaine in Aloxe Corton. The vineyards under the Château’s ownership cover an extraordinary 65 hectares, from Savigny Lès Beaune through to Meursault. In 2022 the estate was certified as fully organic, quite an achievement for a domaine of this size, covering so many fine appellations Against the backdrop of the property’s historical origins, with Cistercian cellars dating back to the 12th century, this dynamic domaine is investing extensively in both the vineyards and the winery, reaching new heights in quality.
Stéphane and winemaker Emmanuel delighted with the quality of the fruit coming in at harvest time. Wanting to focus on the purity of fruit, they destalked 100% of the bunches for the reds, followed by a period of cold maceration in advance of very gentle vinification and maceration. The white wines have gone through 12 months barrel élevage ahead of bottling, capturing the sunny fruit flavours which are so much of the expression of the domaine’s wines this year.

ETIENNE SAUZET | PULIGNY MONTRACHET
Founded by Etienne Sauzet, in the early 1900s, the vineyard land of this family domaine has passed down the generations. Apart from one of his grandsons, Jean-Marc Boillot, who created his own domaine in 1991 with his part of the inheritance, the estate has remained intact. Today the family interests of 15 hectares are managed by Etienne’s great granddaughter, Emilie, and her husband Benoît Riffault, who originates from Sancerre and has white winemaking in his blood. Certified as biodynamic in 2013, their winemaking style is to ferment the juice in cask giving the wines a 12 month maturation on their yeast lees. The wine is then transferred into stainless steel tanks, still on the lees, for a further 6 months before bottling. The domaine has followed this system for many years, which is becoming increasingly popular, as many believe that it both enhances the richness of fruit and preserves the true elegance and fruit purity of Puligny Montrachet.
2022 was an early vintage for the domaine, starting on 22nd August. 2020 started similarly early, but in Benoit’s view the key difference between these two “années solaires” is that the 2022s have much better freshness and acid levels. Thanks in part to vital amount of rainfall at the end of June and, more importantly, the very cool nights that so distinguished the 2022 summer. This is a very bright range, brimming with Puligny purity.
Bourgogne La Tuféra
£145.00 per 6 bottles IB
From vineyards just outside the appellational boundaries of Puligny Montrachet but within the commune of the village, this is always a charming Bourgogne Blanc. Lemon yellow colour, the lively citrus flavours give a lift to the subtle creamy texture. Easy, but with some dry extract giving depth on the finish. Drink 2024-2029

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières
£345.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Les Perrières’ thin topsoil and dense limestone subsoil typically produces very mineral wines with laser-like focus. Lemon sherbet and clementine, the pristine purity is given added nuance by flavours of cracked hazelnut and crème caramel on the finish. Drink 2025-2034

A fragrance of freshly pressed summer flowers, jasmine and white peach. A little less powerful than some years, 2022 is a graceful example of this cuvée. It has beautiful poise and great balance on the finish. Drink 2025-2035

DOMAINE COFFINET-DUVERNAY | CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET
In our view this fine domaine is an unsung hero from the village of Chassagne Montrachet, partly due to its youth. The Domine was only founded in the mid-1980s, following the marriage of Philippe Duvernay from Rully in the Côte Chalonnaise and Laura Coffinet, a member of one of the most established families in Chassagne. Together they have created an enviable 7 hectare domaine with, unusually, all their vineyard holdings exclusively in just one commune: Chassagne Montrachet, with some of the finest sites the appellation has to offer.
Bastien Duvernay’s winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention. In 2022 the “matière” and depth of quality fruit meant that there was no need for any batonnage (stirring up the yeast lees in the cask). Their policy is to encourage the natural rise in cellar temperature in springtime to let the lees enrich and feed their wines, providing a breadth and individuality to their wines. The alcohol levels at harvest time were refreshingly low at 12.5% and this is a very fine selection.
Chassagne Montrachet
£235.00 per 6 bottles IB
The fruit for this excellent cuvée comes from 3 separate plots, one near Puligny, a central parcel and the third Premier Cru Champs Gain. Vanilla pod and unsalted butter intermingle with an earthy terroir core. A relaxed and approachable wine to be enjoyed in its youth. Drink 2024-2028
Chassagne Montrachet Blanchots Dessous
£270.00 per 6 bottles IB
Sitting alongside Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru, Bastien and Philippe feel its characteristics are so distinctive and so good that they merit bottling separately to the rest of their village parcels. A charming bouquet of summer flowers, peach and crème caramel. This has depth and nuanced intensity with flavours of nutmeg and sea salt fudge. The textural feeling of dry extract gives further depth and length. Drink 2025-2030
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Clos St Jean
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB
The Clos St Jean vineyard sits high up on the Chassagne hillside and, as a cooler location, one expects a drive of minerality in this wine. A touch broader in character this vintage thanks to the warm summer. Deliciously generous, with notes of melon and apricot. This is rounded and full, but never loses sight of the vineyard’s typical tension, with a long taut finish. Excellent. Drink 2025-2031
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Maltroie Coffinet Duvernay
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB
This Premier Cru sits plumb in the middle of the appellation, producing a flamboyant wine. Fresh fruit salad flavours balance ripe exotic fruit. Cream and almond paste on the finish, this is a very pleasing style. Drink 2024-2030
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champgains
£310.00 per 6 bottles IB

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Fairendes
£350.00 per 6 bottles IB
Fairendes is a lieu-dit within the better known Premier Cru of Morgeot and the Coffinets bottle this plot separately. DOMAINE BRUNO COLIN | CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET
The village of Chassagne Montrachet has many long-established family names on its CV, but none more so than Colin. Whether under their own name or by marriage, they are interconnected with just about all the great houses in the appellation. Bruno is the son of Michel Colin-Deleger and inherited an enviable portfolio of 22 appellations from his parents, covering 8.75 hectares. His first vintage was back in 1993 and, having worked with his father and brother up to 2003, he decided to create his own domaine in 2004.
With full confidence in his sparkling new winery, Bruno took the bold decision to defer his harvest, picking 10 days later than some his neighbours, starting on 29th August. In part this is due to his meticulous vine training, which defers the vine’s development and therefore allows for a later ripening which he feels is so important to give full depth of flavour to Chardonnay grapes. He also points out that the acidity in grapes holds up much longer in years of cool nights such as 2022, so there really wasn’t any rush. The end result is an extraordinary array of brilliant wines, terroir identifiable, precise and very rewarding indeed.

Impressive in style, this wine benefits from Bruno’s judicious use of barrel élevage of just 10 months and approximately 20% new oak. Whilst a little reserved in scent, the flavours are enticing, combining lemon zest and freshly buttered toast. This is taut on the finish, with excellent length. Drink 2025-2030

Coming from 60-year-old vines planted in 1963, Bruno’s parcel is at the forefront of quality for the appellation. Pale straw colour, it is initially reticent, but soon the array of fruit salad flavours and hints of warm butter and brioche open out, coating the mouth with noticeable volume. The finish has a granular, earthy sensation, leaving an impression of a wine of true quality. Drink 2025-2035
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
£470.00 per 6 bottles IB
The historical site of an old hemp field, this is a slightly cooler location amongst the Chassagne Premiers Crus and therefore creates wines with natural energy and brightness. Just 2 casks of this wonderful wine have been made, so volumes are carefully restricted. Striking and open, panna cotta, English pear and quince. The warmer nature of the vintage is expressed very positively here, with crunchy nuts and honeycomb underpinned by a fine central spine of minerality. Fine and very persistent. Drink 2025-2034
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte Bruno Colin

So full of class, quite simply this is a gorgeous Chassagne. Drink 2026-2035

£895.00 per 6 bottles IB

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière
£760.00 per 6 bottles IB
La Truffière is Bruno’s only vineyard in Puligny Montrachet. Situated just below the hamlet of Blagny it takes its name from the Burgundy truffle which flourished here historically when vineyards were less prolific. Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru

DOMAINE MARC COLIN | CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET
Marc Colin retired many years ago, and his children, Pierre-Yves, Damien, Joseph, and Caroline ran this fabulous estate together for many years. In 2005, Pierre-Yves split away and formed his own domaine, followed by Joseph who branched off on his own in 2016. 2021 represents the Domaine’s fifth vintage with Damien and Caroline at the helm, managing 12 hectares of vines in the Côte de Beaune. They recently relocated to a larger cuverie and cellar, giving them more space so they can rack and bottle their wines later, allowing them their preferred 18-month élevage before bottling (12 in cask and 6 on the lees in vat). This luxury sees the domaine entering a new era for making wines at an even more stellar level.
Damien noted that whilst the harvest date of 25th August was the earliest of his lifetime, what has struck him most about the 2022 vintage is that the wines do not possess the typical characteristics of a hot year. Alcohol levels are at a rewarding level, between 12.5% and 13%, and the cool summer nights have resulted in excellent, bright levels of acidity. He says that St Aubin is perfectly placed for today’s warmer climatic conditions, as the slopes which make up the appellation are in a naturally cooler location, meaning its wines still retain traditional Burgundian freshness and lower alcohol levels despite warmer temperatures.
St Aubin 1er Cru Les Castets
£225.00 per 6 bottles IB
The last of St Aubin’s Premiers Crus as you leave it heading northwest, Les Castets is perfectly positioned to support Damien’s theory of the benefits of appellation’s cooler location. Floral aromas of jasmine, nectarine and a smattering of crunchy hazelnut. A very textured wine, with almost tannic depth, firmly structured with superb length. Classy. Drink 2024-2030
St Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly
£285.00 per 6 bottles IB
The growers in St Aubin like to think of this as their little Grand Cru due to its very special location above Chevalier Montrachet. Domaine Marc Colin has five different parcels on the hillside which they blend on the finish of vinification. A vineyard with minimal topsoil, it shines out of the glass, with charming white peach and guava aromas. The volume of fruit and richness sits beautifully alongside Dip Dab sherbet and chalky minerality. Long and mouth-watering finish. Drink 2025-2030
Chassagne Montrachet Cuvée Margot
£285.00 per 6 bottles IB
Named after Damien’s grandmother Margot who was the source of his and Caroline’s prized Le Montrachet vineyard, this is a delicious example of Chassagne village, coming from five separate locations. A wine of volume and depth with exotic aromas of pineapple and mango, rich and creamy flavours, and firmly tensile on the finish. Drink 2024-2030
Puligny Montrachet Les Enseignières
£285.00 per 6 bottles IB
Whilst Enseignières is a prized village location sitting just below the great Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet, Damien says its real merit is that the vines are 70 years old, and it is this which gives the wine its quality and depth. Attractive perfumed nose of peony, rose petal, lime and sherbet. Pleasing and graceful with a silky soft acacia honey charm, and finely composed on the finish. Drink 2024-2030
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains
£405.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
A very clean expression of this warm mid sloped Premier Cru. Pink grapefruit and kumquat scent with a hint of exotic fruit. Gentle and graceful, this is so easy and charming with its peach and pear flavours on the finish that it is almost irresistible. Lovely. Drink 2025-2032
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
£405.00 per 6 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
One of Chassagne’s last Premiers Crus before you arrive at St Aubin. This is racy and fresh, with stunning citrus flavours of lime, quince and clementine. The early impression of subtlety recedes as the fullness of the 2022 fruit evolves, and flavours of nutmeg and fresh walnut give rewarding persistence. Drink 2025-2031
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vide Bourses
£240.00 per 3 bottles IB
(On Allocation)
Only 1.3 hectares, this is a bold and generous Premier Cru; not a surprise for a vineyard which is a terroir extension of Bâtard Grand Cru. Rich, ripe, full and flamboyant, a melange of fruit flavours sit beneath the brioche and freshly baked croissant richness. A powerful wine, with length and depth. Drink 2025-2032

DOMAINE JUSTIN GIRARDIN | SANTENAY
The Girardin family and their delightful wines embody the truest values of a classic Burgundian domaine. The family history dates back to 1570 and their vineyard holding of 17 hectares represents a sizeable estate in Burgundian terms, reflecting the family’s standing and position in the southern end of the Côte de Beaune. The young and extremely talented Justin, now in his early 30s, assumed total control in 2015. He enjoys the support and experience of his mother Valérie and father Jacques.
Justin’s policy is for minimum levels of intervention in the winery, all made possible by his meticulously attentive vineyard management techniques. He is a man of the soil and has a reputation of being the first out on a cold winter’s morning tending his vines as dawn breaks. The ease of the vintage is very apparent in this superb range. He commented that, for him, one of the main advantages was the return to normal volumes, allowing a more natural vinification and élevage process. This offered greater blending opportunities for individual cuvées, with less impact of both oak and small yields. As he said: “The difficulty of 2022 was to find difficulties!”
Santenay Blanc Les Terrasses de Bievaux
£130.00 per 6 bottles IB
£135.00 per 3 magnums IB
The steeply terraced slopes of Bievaux have a natural coolness giving this wine an excellent freshness. In 2022, with his focus on fruit and terroir, Justin opted for larger oak barrels (400 litre as opposed to 228) for aging this cuvée to reduce the wood impact on the wine, with a first-rate result. Freshly squeezed lime juice notes flow into a taut vigour from the chalk-based soil. The southern exposition gives very expressive full fruit and a deliciously rewarding creamy finish. Drink 2024-2028
Santenay Rouge 1er Cru Clos Rousseau
£145.00 per 6 bottles IB
£160.00 per 3 magnums IB
Sitting high up at the southern boundary of the appellation, this is a relatively cool vineyard which flourished in 2022. Dark in colour, this Santenay has an intense fragrance of autumnal forest fruit and spice, while the ripe flavours are balanced perfectly by tension and freshness. Not only is this already approachable, but it also has the ability to age. Drink 2025-2034
Savigny Les Beaune Rouge 1er Cru Les Peuillets
£150.00 per 6 bottles IB
Savigny’s last Premier Cru before arriving at the slopes of Beaune has warm sandy soils which produce a very approachable style of wine. Dark cherry in colour and aroma, this has deep plush black fruit flavours. The tannins are present but are in keeping with the abundant fruit, giving length and personality. Drink 2025-2035
Meursault Les Clous
£270.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
A very pleasant Meursault from a parcel of land that sits just above the 1er cru vineyards. With a hint of earthiness on the nose, the palate balances breadth and richness with a rewarding steeliness and freshness. The finish has terrific length making it a beautiful addition to Justin’s range for us this year. Drink 2024-2032
Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
£445.00 per 6 bottles IB
Morgeot is the vilage’s largest Premier Cru with many subdivisions and nuances but, in essence, produces full textured wines which are a brilliant portrayal of Chassagne Montrachet. It opens with perfumed white peach and peony. A structured style, with breadth and volume, this is lifted by flavours of grapefruit and lemon zest, and a lively touch of acid freshness on the finish. Drink 2024-2039

DOMAINE ELODIE ROY | CHEILLY-LES-MARANGES
2022 represents the 5th anniversary of Elodie’s return to the family domaine, taking over 10 hectares of family vineyards in Maranges, which is the most southerly appellation of the Côte de Beaune. After her university studies, she realised law and banking were not for her. At that time, it wasn’t practical for Elodie to immediately return to the family domaine, which had been developed by her grandfather Robert and father Pierre. So, she sought to cut her teeth in wine production elsewhere, and couldn’t have chosen better than 11 years assisting Anne Gros in Vosne Romanée. After such an extraordinary apprenticeship, Elodie was eager to return in 2018, ready to make her mark on the family estate.
Due to the variety of exposures of her vineyards, Elodie chooses to pick later than many in the village. She says this suits her as she says she can get some hard-to-find, highly skilled ‘vendanges’, harvester, from Meursault and Puligny once they have finished the harvest there! This later picking policy allows her to vinify a proportion with whole bunches to produce wines with a seductive touch and a degree of backbone, as seen in 2022.
Bourgogne Pinot Noir
£105.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
This is a fine parcel of Pinot Noir, planted in 1963. The vines lie on the edge of the village on clay soil. They have a more northerly exposure, enjoying the sunshine from around 9:00 AM. 20% whole bunch and 20% new oak, striking red fruit flavours of redcurrant and raspberry. Forward drinking with a hint of nutmeg on the finish. Drink Date 2024-2032
Maranges La Rue des Pierres
£120.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
This village cuvée comes from lower-lying vineyards bordering the commune of Santenay. For this cuvée Elodie destemmed all the fruit, and it has produced a delectable and charming wine. Morello cherry and blackberry crumble, the vanilla oak gives a coating of sweetness and a subtle tannic tension on the finish. Drink Date 2024-2032
Maranges Les Goty
£130.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
Elodie likes to separate this cuvée from vines that sit next to Santenay Clos Rousseau as its individuality of flavours are too dominant to blend with her other parcels. The berries from this site are very small and intense, so she whole cluster vinifies 80% of the fruit. With heaps of dark alpine fruits, the tannins have a firm, granular personality, tremendous density of fruit and a very persistent finish. Drink Date 2026-2035
Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres
£160.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond
This vineyard’s close proximity to the stony, clay soils of Chassagne Montrachet has built it a reputation for white wine. Elodie is one of just a few who are focusing on its ability to make a high-class red from vines planted back in 1952. A very relaxed and gentle style, with open generous summer berry fruits, it is rewardingly succulent, balanced by a supple central tannic core and so much finesse on the finish. Drink Date 2025-2037

DOMAINE TUPINIER BAUTISITA | MERCUREY
The Tupinier family have been making wine in the appellation since 1770. The domaine now takes its name from them and the late Jacques Tupinier’s son-in-law, Manu Bautista. Manu’s presence fills a room, he has a passion for the domaine and family. With no children of his own, he has employed his sister’s two children who will in turn succeed him. He likes to destalk all the fruit and, following a long cold maceration for the colour and flavour, will do a gentle fermentation over a period of two to three weeks. The estate’s style shows off a harmonious richness and confidence.
Manu explained that in Mercurey, after some good rains in June, the rest of the growing season was extremely dry. Protecting the vines from any hydric stress was crucial in the final run up to the harvest. Controlling yields at under 40hl/ha was a key part in this, and the balance he has achieved between richness and controlled alcohol levels at 13% has resulted in a fine and harmonious selection. Thanks to Manu’s and his friend Vincent Charton’s efforts, Mercurey is rightly a rising star in the Cote Chalonnaise.
WHITE WINES
Mercurey Blanc 1er Cry En Sazenay
£320.00 per 12 bottles IB
The light soil base and easterly facing slopes make this vineyard a very good location for growing Chardonnay. Lemon yellow colour: aromas of noisette, melon and guava, on the palate it shows its forward nature, charming opulence with an appealing viscosity on the finish. Drink 2024-2028
RED WINES
Mercurey Clos de Touches
£255.00 per 12 bottles IB
A relatively new cuvée having historically been blended into the domaine’s vieilles vignes cuvee. Manu decided to separate it out, highlighting the individuality of the local hamlet’s style. Surprisingly broad shouldered, with an ample, full-bodied mouthfeel and excellent fruit concentration. Great length. Drink 2026-2037
Mercurey 1er Cru en Sazenay
£290.00 per 12 bottles IB
Manu is fortunate enough to own a full hectare of this fine south easterly facing Premier Cru with an ideal mix of Côte de Nuits clay and limestone soils. A smattering of vanilla and oak on the nose, on the palate it combines charming, sweet black fruit with bright appealing zest of freshness. A very complete and ripe style. Drink 2026-2038
Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy
£375.00 per 12 bottles IB
The east facing slopes of Clos du Roy combine soils of clay and chalk and make wines of great distinction. A very striking style, with tayberry, violet and cinnamon perfumed nose. The palate is appealingly juicy and plush. Spiced and dark mocha flavours, the tannins are silky in style: this is a bit of a showstopper. Lovely! Drink 2026-2035

DOMAINE VINCENT & JEAN PIERRE CHARTON | MERCUREY
Domaine Charton is a little jewel within the appellation of Mercurey, founded by Vincent’s grandfather in 1941. Vincent credits his father Jean-Pierre with assembling their 11.5 hectare portfolio from some of the appellation’s finest locations. Jean-Pierre, in his role as vineyard manager for the Bouchard estates in the village, had a watchful eye for his favourite spots. When they occasionally came on to the market, providing they were within his means, he quietly picked them up to expand and become one of the village’s most respected domaines.
Whilst nowadays Jean-Pierre is more often than not out on “la Chasse”, he supports his son, taking great pride in the recognition he has received as one of the best young winemakers in Burgundy. A strict pruning policy of leaving 5 to 6 buds per vine, means the vines’ energy is totally focused on achieving maximum ripeness and therefore prioritising quality rather than quantity. At harvest time, Vincent destalks 100% of the fruit and in 2022 he did a longer vinification at slightly lower temperatures, to place focus on the fruit. In his view, the polyphenols of the berries were sufficient that there was no need to excessively extract additional tannins from the bunches.
Mercurey 1er Cru Les Nauges
£165.00 per 6 bottles IB
Les Naugues is a prized vineyard within the appellation and its deep clay soils make a gloriously full and rich Mercurey wine. Morello cherry and liquorice, there is a tight, limestone subsoil character to this wine, with direct mineral tannins. Very pure, restrained and poised finish. Drink 2026-2035
Mercurey 1er Cru La Chassiere
£165.00 per 6 bottles IB
Vincent describes this as his “petit Volnay”. It is deliciously generous, with enticing plum blackberry and damson flavours. There is a charming velvet-like ease to this wine, with soft tannins and a sweet, lush finish. Delicious. Drink 2026-2036
Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy
£170.00 per 6 bottles IB
As the name suggests, this is considered to be the most regal of all the Mercurey Premier Cru vineyards. A combination of marl and chalk soil, it produces pronounced and structured wines. Robust and intense, with smoky, dark black fruits on the nose, there is a hint of Pommard-esque power, which highlights both the strength of the appellation and the longevity of the very best Mercurey wines. Excellent. Drink 2026-2036
