Burgundy En Primeur 2022 Chablis

a dirt path in the middle of a vineyard

We are so excited to be launching our 2022 white Burgundy En Primeur selection with a stunning collection of 2022 Chablis. After one of the smallest harvests on record in 2021, the town of Chablis was full of smiling faces when we visited this autumn. 2022 is a vintage which has everything: quantity, quality and, last but very much not least, a cautious approach to pricing.

Everything in 2022 aligned itself to produce a vibrant vintage with zest and appealing ripeness. The vintage is characterised by an enticing florality and scent, bringing together white and citrus fruit with an earthy terror texture. Many of the wines have an appeal and approachability which will allow for early drinking, whilst the more senior Premiers Crus and Grands Crus have great long term prospects, tempting as they are in their youth. In short, this is a lovely vintage for Chablis. Make the most of their availability whilst it lasts!

DOMAINE WILLIAM FÈVRE | CHABLIS

William Fèvre is one of the great names of Chablis. However, in comparison to many estates in the region, William himself was a relative newcomer, producing his first crop in 1959. In a short space of time, he built it up to have substantial holdings in the town of Chablis, accumulating 48 hectares by 1998, expanded further to a substantial 78 hectares under the ownership of Joseph Henriot to include 16 hectares of Premiers Crus and 15 hectares of Grands Crus. In the summer of 2023 it was announced that the Domaine is entering a very exciting new chapter following its purchase by Domaines Baron de Rothschild Lafite, led by Saskia de Rothschild.

Under the direction of technical director Didier Seguier, the vineyard management for the village wines is organic and the Premiers Crus and Grands Crus vineyards have been biodynamic since 2020. Despite 2022 being a relatively easy year in the vineyards, Didier’s attention to detail with his team was as fastidious as ever, quoting an extraordinary 600 man hours per hectare of vines throughout the year in comparison to the 350 hour average in most vineyards! In the winery, he likes to vinify in stainless steel, focusing on primary fruit characters, prior to a careful barrel élevage between 8–12 months depending on the cuvée, with no new oak. The result in 2022 is a very pure expression of the wines of Chablis at all quality levels.

Chablis
£120.00 per 6 bottles IB

William Fèvre owns 47 hectares over 40 different sites within the appellation. A maximum of 10% of the blend is barrel fermented, crafting a Chablis with charm and appeal. Gentle lemon colour, a floral nose of rose petal and white flowers, the palate has an appealing appellational zip of acidity. Lively and fresh, with some sappy depth on the finish. Drink 2024-2028

Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy
£242.00 per 6 bottles IB

The Fèvre parcel of this left bank Premier Cru sits within the more distinctive sub-climat of Troësmes. The fruit is vinified in stainless steel and then 30% matured in barrel. A little shy aromatically, however on the palate its true personality comes out, with a bite of freshly squeezed lemon and a linear limestone minerality. Driven and direct, with a long and poised finish. Drink 2024-2032

Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons
£254.00 per 6 bottles IB

Immediate lime zest and lemon sherbet aromas. This delicious Premier Cru offers the perfect combination of graceful refinement and energetic vitality. Always one of the more forward Premiers Crus in style, this is a delicious example, with rounded white stone fruit charm. So approachable and just lovely! Drink 2024 - 2031

Chablis 1er Cru Montmains
£254.00 per 6 bottles In Bond

A neighbour to 1er Cru Vaillons on the West bank. With vineyards facing southeast with a very high chalk content, stylistically it combines boldness with a keen limestone precision (Not Tasted).

Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume
£278.00 per 6 bottles In Bond

1er Cru Fourchaume is one of Chablis’ most recognised names, with an excellent reputation thanks to its proximity to the great Grand Crus on the right bank of the Serein. Its enviable position allows for excellent ripening and helps to produce a relatively flamboyant Chablis, with great body and depth (Not Tasted).

Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaulorent
£338.00 per 6 bottles In Bond

A particularly fine cuvée as the William Fèvre holdings are in the most prestigious location within the appellation, at the end of Fourchaume before reaching Grand Cru Les Preuses. A prized vineyard producing wines combining opulent appeal, with a streak of mineral bite and zest. It always justifies its reputation as the prestigious of Premier Crus. (Not Tasted)

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
£348.00 per 6 bottles IB

This highly prized site neighbours the seven Grands Crus vineyards. Fèvre owns three plots amounting to 2 hectares, with the oldest parcel near Blanchot planted in 1936. A very confident wine with a brooding structure. The warmer characters of the year appear with a combination of fresh lemon and white nectarine. Its layered intensity and broad earthy structure result in a powerful and concentrated wine with excellent aging prospects. Drink 2025-2035

Chablis Grand Cru Valmur
£484.00 per 6 bottles IB

Valmur sits in its own little valley nestled in the middle of all the Grand Crus, and as a result enjoys the warmth of summer heat. The William Fèvre parcel of Valmur sits alongside Grand Cru Les Clos and is therefore closer in style to its neighbour than some other wines from this vineyard. It is often characterised by a very broad and bold nature, and is a little less mineral (Not Tasted).

Chablis Grand Cru Bougros
£488.00 per 6 bottles IB

William Fèvre own 6 hectares within Bougros and makes two different cuvées. This wine comes from a 4-hectare parcel of old vines planted by William’s father in the 1940s and 1950s. Full of generous richness, a white floral scent, fresh peach and jasmin.  Mouthfilling with great depth showing off its Grand Cru pedigree and a Kimmeridgian earthy substance. A beautifully rewarding finish, with clementine and orange peel, seashore saltiness and freshness. Drink 2026-2036

Chablis Grand Les Preuses
£528.00 per 6 bottles In Bond

The stony soiled vineyard produces a style that is often a little reserved in its youth, but has a fine ability to age, maintaining plumpness with an earthy structure and depth. A fine example of Chablis Grand Cru longevity (Not Tasted).

Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cotes de Bouguerots
£645.00 per 6 bottles IB

A 2 hectare site on the steepest slopes of the appellation creates a very impressive wine, showing off great minerality and salinity. This parcel is characterised by a firm steeliness, and is as quintessential a Chablis as any of their Grand Cru parcels (Not Tasted).

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
£668.00 per 6 bottles IB

A substantial holding of 4 hectares of which half was planted back in the 1940s. This is a flagship Grand Cru, producing wines with great structure and layered dimension and history shows that it can age for a very long time (Not Tasted).

DOMAINE POMMIER | POINCHY

From small acorns grow mighty oaks… In 1990, Denis and Isabelle took over 2 hectares of family land outside the town of Chablis. Today, through astuteness and hard work, they have developed the domaine to represent 23 hectares of high-quality vineyards, all benefiting from their organic philosophy practiced since 2014. Their style is to create fruit-forward wines, a little less focused on a firm mineral bite and more on graceful volume. They always maintain a classical Chablis freshness, combining well with floral and exotic Chardonnay flavours.

According to Denis, the secret in 2022 was not to pick too late, maintaining the life and energy that is so much the soul of their wines. In addition, he emphasized that vineyard management was imperative to carefully control yields. After the ravages of the 2021 frosts, the vines were eager to compensate for the shortfall of crop last year, and it was vital to manage this vigour to balance ripeness and freshness. This was a superb tasting, and the domaine’s more forward-drinking style is pitch-perfect for the vintage.

Chablis
£95.00 per 6 bottles IB

100% vinification in stainless steel tank. Classical and pure, with a maritime scent of oyster shell and sea breeze. This is a deliciously straightforward wine, with citrus fruits, a chalkstone texture and floral lift on the finish. Lovely. Drink 2024-2027

Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet
£155.00 per 6 bottles IB

From a 1-hectare plot of 60-year-old vines, this is a flagship for the domaine. Aromas of honeycomb and yellow fruits offer instant appeal, with noticeable Premier Cru depth. The grip of Seville orange peel on the finish gives terroir definition and further dimension. Drink: 2025-2031

DOMAINE PINSON | CHABLIS

The Pinsons trace their roots in Chablis back to 1640, rivalling the Droin family as one of the oldest in town. Historical records from 1880 detail Louis Pinson selling bottles of their wine under the family label. Today, brothers Laurent and Christophe, along with Laurent’s daughter Charlene, oversee the estate, which boasts an impressive 12 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Les Clos and 4.75 hectares of Mont de Milieu.

The domaine has a commitment to strong traditional values, opting for hand harvesting. While certain cuvées undergo a period of barrel aging, it's always in casks between 2-5 years old—never in new oak. Reflecting on the 2022 vintage, Laurent noted that the harvest commenced on the 31st of August, a luxury they enjoy due to the unique weather conditions in Chablis. All the wines we tasted (except for Grand Cru Les Clos) were bottled on the finish of August, and all showcased the restrained Chablisien character typical of this family’s delightful wines.

Chablis 1er Cru Montmains
£160.00 per 6 bottles IB

The 64-year-old vines on the Pinson plot, adjacent to their parcel of Forêts, yield a fuller style of wine, which Charlene Pinson says is thanks to the mix of clay and chalk-based soils. Notes of acacia honey and quince highlight this vineyard's character, producing a wine that fills the mouth with succulent breadth of creamy ripe fruit and a striking seashell salinity on the finish. Drink 2024-2032

Chablis 1er Cru La Fourchaume
£165.00 per 6 bottles IB

This wonderful site is the most flamboyant of the Pinson’s Chablis Premiers Crus. Aromatics of fresh spice meld with flavours of crème anglaise and vanilla ice cream. Rich in generosity, the lift of lemon sherbet on the finish cleanses and refreshes the palate perfectly. Drink 2025-2033

Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu
£175.00 per 6 bottles IB

The domaine’s most important Premier Cru covers just under 5 hectares, with the fruit sourced from four different locations and vines aged between 18 and 45 years. The quality of the fruit allows the wine to cope with 100% barrel aging. Earthy Chablisien aromatics, with hints of freshly kneaded dough, precede the structure and power of this great Premier Cru. It exudes a class more akin to a Grand Cru, lingering long on the palate. Superb. Drink 2025-2035

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
£295.00 per 6 bottles IB

Regarded by many as Chablis’s grandest Grand Cru, the Pinsons hold a substantial 2.5 hectares. A wine of such structure that it naturally supports 20% of the fruit being vinified in new oak. Refreshing scent of freshly squeezed lemon and limes; it slowly builds on the palate, revealing great dimension of fruit and weight. Sturdy and poised, this is very fine indeed. Drink 2025-2035

DOMAINE BILLAUD SIMON | CHABLIS

The Billaud-Simon name is long-established in Chablis, dating back to 1815 when Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud purchased his first vineyards. The estate remained in the family ownership for 200 years until Erwan Faiveley purchased Billaud-Simon for Joseph Faiveley in 2015. This represents a new era for the Faiveley family, one of the Côte d’Or’s most significant vineyard owners, now investing their expertise and commitment to producing great wines in the Yonne and Chablis with approximately 18 hectares of exceptional vineyard holdings.

Managed by Olivier Bailly on behalf of the Faiveley family, Olivier has very much maintained the house style. His aim is for wines with Chablis terroir authenticity; oak levels are kept to a minimum, and specific cuvées receive no barrel aging at all and go through an elevage on the yeast lees in cuve. Despite the temperatures of 30°C during our tasting visit in mid-October, it is a testament to the quality of these 2022’s that this was as fine a selection of wines as I have tasted at the domaine in 30 years. Olivier has achieved everything he has set out to do, and the wines provide an extraordinary insight into the individuality of appellational styles within the region.

Chablis
£116.00 per 6 bottles IB
£130.00 per 3 magnums IB

With over 6 hectares of village Chablis adjoining both 1ers and Grands Crus sites, Olivier has all the ammunition to make a benchmark Chablis. No oak during the elevage but careful maturation on the wine's yeast lees creates a style with great purity and mineral depth. Pale straw colour, with a lime green tinge, scents of oyster shell with a hint of brioche. Floral flavours, with characters of pink grapefruit and freshly squeezed lemon giving soft classy finish. Drink 2024-2029

Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons
£204.00 per 6 bottles IB

Lying to the south-west of the town of Chablis, this fine 1er Cru produces arguably the most floral and graceful style of wine from the slopes of the appellation. This is exemplary in its typicity, floral on the nose, rose petal and jasmine. This wine from three different locations; Olivier explains the two in Secher give the cuvée its wonderful florality and the third in Roncieres with its 95-year-old vines give the depth and complexity. An absolute beauty. Drink 2025-2032

Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu
£216.00 per 6 bottles IB
£230.00 per 3 magnums IB
£150.00 per jeroboam IB

A very noble Premier Cru on the easterly side of the town. It starts in the glass a little shy, with light white fruit and peony characters, but slowly builds as the creamy volume and crème fraiche flavours evolve. Subtle but very rewarding. Drink 2025-2034

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
£243.00 per 6 bottles IB
£258.00 per 3 magnums IB
£198.00 per jeroboam IB

The most sought after of the Premiers Crus, lying alongside the great Grands Crus vineyards overlooking the town of Chablis. Olivier explains their parcel sits on white clay and so has an abundance of depth and needs neither vinification nor aging in oak, as it has enough of everything already! A very classy cuvée, with a tensile mineral character, full of gunflint and seashells. Drink 2025-2035

Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir
£420.00 per 6 bottles IB
£435.00 per 3 magnums IB

Vaudesir is a sheltered vineyard and has the ability to produce very broad styled wines. An equal blend of 50% barrel fermented and aged and 50% in stainless steel. A juicy and succulent style of Chablis, characters of freshly baked bread, warm toffee and fudge; it richly coats the palate, and a finish of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes and spice give an impression of Côte de Beaune breadth. Drink 2025-2036

Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses
£473.00 per 6 bottles IB
£490.00 per 3 magnums IB

Such a fine Grand Cru, recognised for making wines with great power and complexity. This is the crown jewel amongst the abundance of great vineyards at Domaine Billaud Simon. A melange of guava, quince, and clementine bouquet. A wine of great vitality, it is instantly captivating, so full of life and energy, with its weighted layered flavours of citrus fruit, blood orange and clotted cream. The 80-year-old vines provide a perfect harmony between power and refinement. Such a persistent finish, this has a very long life ahead of it. Drink 2026-2037

DOMAINE JEAN PAUL ET BENOIT DROIN | CHABLIS

To be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620 is truly remarkable. Over this 400-year period, the Droins have cultivated a sizeable estate of 26 hectares, boasting an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within Chablis. Benoit joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24 and has, over the last decade, assumed total control. Whilst upholding the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil, he has subtly adjusted the winemaking style. Today, the use of oak is less prevalent than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, leading to a greater terroir identity in the domaine’s wines, characterised by a mineral drive and edge. Benoit is firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of the greats of Chablis, consistently achieving top spots in blind tastings. In our view, his brilliance today is surpassed by none.

Reflecting on the 2022 vintage, Benoit noted the perfect combination of sufficient warmth for ideal ripeness, whilst benefiting from cooler periods, especially at night, to retain the freshness for which the finest Chablis are measured. He avoids the trend of long barrel elevage for white wines and is one of the earliest bottlers in the region, preferring just 8-10 months of barrel maturation. For Benoit, it is imperative to preserve both the fruit and freshness in a wine - the hallmark of great Chablis - and this superb range showcases his style perfectly.

Chablis
£120.00 per 6 bottles IB

From a selection of plots covering 9 hectares, this wine receives no barrel aging, making it a classical example of Chablis. Lemons, limes and a limestone mineral lift of scent. Surprisingly dense with a body more akin to a Premier Cru, it is layered, bright, and restoratively energetic. Drink 2024 – 2030

Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons
£180.00 per 6 bottles IB

Vaillons tends to be the prettiest and most floral of the Chablis Premiers Crus. Benoit’s cuvée has an added dimension with 25% of the fruit aged in cask. In 2022, along with Mont de Milieu, it was one of the few sites impacted by an early spring frost, resulting in a smaller yield. With harmonious and approachable flavours of white peach, this is graceful and elegant with youthful charm. Drink 2024 – 2030

Chablis 1er Cru Montmains
£204.00 per 6 bottles IB

Neighbouring Premier Cru Vaillons, the higher proportion of clay in the soil of Montmains creates a wine with greater presence that one might expect. Benoit likes to mature 40% of the fruit in cask, contributing to a creamier and broader texture. Floral on the nose, with notes of honeysuckle, quince, and medlar, the finish has a tight intensity: layered, full, and very long. Drink 2025 – 2035

Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
£231.00 per 6 bottles IB

The mix of white stone soils and excellent exposure makes this high-class right bank Premier Cru a favourite among senior vignerons, especially given its proximity to the great 7 Grands Crus. The scent of spring flowers and fresh orange gives the impression of a graceful, elegant wine. On the palate, it builds to show both intensity and drive, with a lovely tight chalky tension and maritime freshness lingering on the finish. Drink 2025 – 2035

Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir
£360.00 per 6 bottles IB

Benoit has two different parcels in this enclosed and relatively warm Grand Cru. He describes this as his most sensual of wines, stating that it “sparkles.” Aromas of honey and pine kernel, it starts gentle and fine, with light white fruit flavours. There is a perfect balance between subtle tension and graceful elegance. Very harmonious, with tremendous persistence on the finish. Drink 2025 – 2034

Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles
£420.00 per 6 bottles IB

The warmth of this location gives rise to a flamboyant wine, well supported by 50% barrel aging. A remarkable bouquet of fresh spice, white pepper, and vanilla pod. The fruit feels rich and ripe, with a creamy personality of warm fudge. While a little ostentatious, the bite of acidity on the finish lifts the wine, giving nuance and complexity. Wonderful! Drink 2025 – 2036

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos Hommage à Louis
£420.00 per 6 Bottles In Bond

Although within the boundary of Grand Cru Valmur, the Droins have always labelled their parcel as Les Clos since Louis Droin purchased the vineyards in the 1920s, of which is its more representative. Golden straw colour, with a mix of smoke, quince, and yellow fruits. A great depth of fruit fills the mouth with flavours of jersey cream and unsalted butter, finishing with sea salt and caramel. A wine for aging; outstanding. Drink 2026 - 2037
